Help Streaming Audio Quality (Pandora) Still Poor

aclos3

Newbie
Since most of the discussion on this matter died last August, I'd like to ask how this affects everyone else and if any work around exists.

What is known about this bug:
-Streaming audio quality in Pandora and a few other apps went from good to poor for any device with 2.2.
-All devices are effected, but you likely can't hear the difference through the phone speaker alone.
-This issue was reported immediately after 2.2's release (on the Nexus One first?)
-Sometime in August, the code.google report and Pandora's FAQ section indicated that a fix had been made, but that it was up to manufacturers/carriers to apply the fix (through or an OS update or otherwise).
-2.2.1 did not include this fix

Are there any ways of fixing this? I have rooted before and my device was pretty unstable. I have a much newer refurbished phone now though and I'm willing to try it again, however, I would really prefer a non root solution. Also, as long as the build is based on froyo, won't it have these problems anyway? If you force the 'stagefight' change, don't you make some other tradeoff?

Thank you for your input.

The issue resides in the fact that in order to fix the problem you'll need to have root access. The issue lies in system files itself, and IIRC the fix was either a matter of adding an entry to the build.prop file or else removing / replacing a sytem library file (or three).

Either way, you have to be rooted to do it.

I have a pair of Motorola S9 HD BT headphones.headset and the sound quality in them is really not all that bad- I listen o Pandora 3-4 times a week at 4-5 hours a pop. However, I do remember the quality simply not being as good as before.

I'll try to dig up the threads on them and see if I can find the manual solution.

This thread has some info: http://androidforums.com/droid-all-things-root/169151-aac-fix-not-working.html

This thread has an Audio DSP manager, which I have used on several of the last ROMs I have installed on my phone - this may be why my audio seems palatable now - http://androidforums.com/droid-all-things-root/138318-app-android-dsp-equalizer-froyo.html

This thread talks about Pandora - http://androidforums.com/droid-all-things-root/119289-any-rom-compatible-pandora.html

Short answer is that I think the Audio DSP manager (which also requires root privileges to implement, BTW) was the fix for the crappy sounding music, but that a lot of custom ROMs also were manually disabling Stagefright.

Thank you very much for info. I think I am going to strongly consider rooting again. Who knows, maybe this newer device will be more stable.
