Help Struck in boot loop

Gandriod

Newbie
Recently rooted my evo and started with fresh rom. Then I was experimenting with miui with different themes and it got struck in boot loop:mad:. I can get to the hboot, but if select

Interesting. If you were just flashing ROMs, it's rare to actually mess up recovery. Were you doing anything else? Did you flash an PC36IMG.zip files for any reason? Were you flashing radios or anything? Either way, you should be able to fix it by reflashing recovery. You can get whatever version of clockwork you had before (use 2.6.0.1 regardless of what you had) from here:

http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/259446-clockwork-amon-ra-pc36img-files.html

Follow the instructions in the thread for flashing it. You should be able to copy it to the card using the hboot usb option while in hboot with your phone connected to your computer via usb. Let me know if you need more instructions.

I was changing the themes before the boot loop.

That doesn't seems to be working.

  1. Downloaded the file: PC36IMG_Clockwork_2.6.0.1
  2. Copied to the file to sd using usb adapter
  3. Renamed as PC36IMG
  4. Phone booted to hboot
    • Do you want to start update? Yes (vol up)
    • it said recovery ok
    • update completed
    • do you want to reboot the device? Yes (vol up)
And its reboots again and again!

Really worried now.

Well, I would expect it to still be rebooting, but you should be able to get into recovery now. If you go back to hboot, then select the option to go to recovery, what happens?

It vibrates and shows me the white "htc evo 4g" screen. Then black screen and then again the white htc evo 4g screen.

It does that when you try to go to recovery? Interesting. Try a different recovery images such as RA, or even the stock one just to test. What's your battery level at (or what was it since you can't really check now)?

OK I am going to try RA recovery(Amon RA 2.2.1). If that doesn't help I will try the stock recovery (Stock Recovery 3.70.651.1 (Added 01/18/2011))

I am able to charge the battery...and it should have full charge.

Ok, just wanted to rule out any low battery issues. Go ahead and try a different recovery images. Let's see what that does.

Interesting... Just so we're clear, you can't boot up normally or into recovery, correct? What happens when you try to boot up normally? The same thing? Is it rebooting at the same spot? If so, let's see if you can at least flash a ROM. Here's the sprint lovers ROM:

[ROM] 01/26/11 | SPRINT LOVERS | 2.2 | 3.70.651.1 | Radio/Wimax/PRI All-In-One - xda-developers

Use the first download, which is a combo download in a PC36IMG.zip format. I do not expect this to fix recovery, but let's see if it helps you boot up.

EDIT: wait before you do that, let's try one other thing. I just had a thought. Try copying everything from your card to your computer (as a backup) then delete everything off the card. Try to get into recovery after that. Also, are you using the stock card or a different one?

Tried this...by removing everything from SD card and kept card empty. Recovery ---> reboots:mad:. Also tried recovery without SD card and that didn't help either.

Ok, it was just a though. Apparently not a very good one at that...

Try sprint lovers and see if you can at least boot up. I suspect something else might be going on here. I'll have to look more into this one if the ROM still won't even boot up.

That image didn't work. Going back to the same boot loop.

And by bootloop, you mean it shows the white splash screen, then goes to a black screen and reboots? It never makes it to the boot screen (animation)? It almost sounds like it's stuck trying boot to recovery. I'm going to have to look into this one. I assume you've had to pull the battery out each time, correct?

Exactly correct. It goes to white "htc evo 4G" and goes black and white screen again and again. And yes, I have to pull the battery to stop this loop.

The good news is I've found a few reports with the exact same symptoms, even down to the fact that it seems have only happened to those using an AOSP based ROM. The bad news is nobody seems to have been able to fix it. So far everybody who ran into that problem tried everything I've suggested. Still looking.

One quick thing. While in hboot, select the option to clear storage, if you haven't already. Try rebooting after that. I just want rule out anything that is attempting to boot the phone in a weird way. It might still not boot up normally, but let's see if you can get into recovery. I didn't really expect it to boot up earlier since you didn't flash the ROM from recovery (and subsequently didn't wipe data or anything), but it appears it didn't help at all (even a bootloop at the boot animation would have been progress). Try it out and see if it helps. I'll see if I can get more information.

Two questions:

1) Have you ever messed with any NV items?
2) How old is your phone (when did you get it)? What is your HW version, if you know it?

Hi akazabam,

1. not sure what's nv means. All I did was to root (unrevoked), and flashed few ROMs (4 total). I didn't even change the kernels that came with each ROMs. And tried various themes. That's all I did.

2. I got the phone in June 2010...first week of the release!..but I don't know the h/w version.

1) That's ok, I figured if you didn't know what this meant, you didn't change anything. Just for reference, I was referring to stuff like this:

http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/266672-mods-tweaks.html

2) Good, that's what I wanted to know. Had you ever rooted with the eng bootloader in the past, or have you always used what I'm going to guess is unrevoked? Since you have hboot 2.10 and s-off, you must have used some method or another that ultimately roots via unrevoked-forever. I've been doing some research on and off on this issue, and this is what I've found:

a) It's only happened to older phones (possibly a coincidence).
b) It's only ever happened while running an AOSP ROM (both CM and MIUI)
c) Most of the people who had the problem got a replacement before a solution was every found.
d) One person fixed it by flashing the eng bootloader (hboot .76).

I can't prove anything yet, but it might have something to do with a relation between AOSP ROMs and the eng bootloader. I don't know why or how, but I know others had the eng bootloader in the past when they had this issue. That's why I asked. You must have accepted an OTA update in order to have hboot 2.10. Did you accept the last OTA update? Did you root after doing so?

My suggestion would normally be to downgrade to the eng bootloader, as described here:

[GUIDE] HBOOT 2.10(.02 -?)[</3] Got you Down? - Get 0.76[<3] Back! - xda-developers

The problem is that part of the process requires you to go to recovery. You can try it, and hope you can get to recovery by that point, but I can't guarantee anything. To be honest, I'm not sure that this would fix your problem anyway. I just know one person fixed the problem by doing so, but they had an older hboot that didn't require as complicated of a process.

If you attempt the above, I take no responsibility for the problem getting worse. Attempt anything in that link at your own risk.

I guess at this point, a good question would be if you have insurance. The problem has to be fixable somehow, but just in case, do you have insurance? I'll see if I can find out anything else.

Hey. I'm having this EXACT issue! Tried all the suggestions above to no avail :( any other ideas anyone?

Unfortunately, not at this time. What were the circumstances that led you to this state? What ROM were you running (if any)? What is your current hboot version? Are you having the exact same problem where it reboots at the splash screen when booting up normally and when going to recovery?
