Okay. I'm fairly confused here. I rooted my phone to use a backup utlity then apparently let it automatically run an update so it stopped working. My bad. I'm a reasonably proficient software user but I've never had occasion to need to root a phone before.
I need to figure out how to get back to some sort of workable system.
Currently my Samsung Galaxy II phone boots into this screen:

Things I've tried
* selected facotry reset nd wipe cache and held down the power key till the phone rebooted.
* Attempted to flash a new ROM using update.zip on the SD Card. I downloaded a file that seemed to be for that purpose but I was hazy on how the whole process works. Rename the file to update.zip and copy it to the SD Card?
* Downloaded a new ROM and attempted to install it using Odin. The first bar in Odin lights up 0:[COM7], and it says SetupConnection but nothing ever actually happens. When I disconnect the phone the light goes out which seems to suggest Odin is "seeing" it.
QUESTIONS
A) Should I be using Odin or installing something to the SDCard as update.zip
B) What should I actually be using in either case. It's not clear what the various files out there are and which of them are needed, and I admit to being confused...
