Stupid Question from a New User

Hello. I'm about to buy my first smart phone. I'm trying to figure out, if I were to buy an Android with Froyo now, will I be able to upgrade to Gingerbread, Honeycomb and beyone as Android keeps pumping out updates? Or am I stuck with the version that my phone comes with?

If I can update as they put out new desserts, (I have T-Mobile) do these updates come standard from most carriers of do you have to purchase them?
Thank you!

The updates typically have to be compiled by the phone manufacturer and then released by the carrier (t-Mobile). Typically they seem to be doing only one major update per device (with a few exceptions).

Welcome to the Android Forums!

Another thing to consider is some of the upcoming updates will increase minimum memory and CPU requirements. This has potential to impact which phones will be capable of supporting these upgraded Android OS's.
