Help Sudden shutdown and 20% battery drop

Lurker
Today something weird happened with the battery. I heard a mail notification sound, pulled the phone out of the pocket and it didn't react. After a moment I realized that it is turned off.

I couldn't turn it on until I took out and put back the battery. When the phone booted battery level was 12%, but before the shutdown it was about 35%.

Any idea what is the problem? Battery, phone itself, software?

It is possible for a phone to freeze and look off, but have some of the internals going flat out, which can drain the battery quickly. It happened to my old Nokia X6 once - looked off, but was getting quite warm. Also, as batteries get older, they can drop quite quickly (I'm not sure how old your phone is) for various resons.

I would be inclined to assume it was a random software glitch, unless it happens again. You could keep an eye on the battery level and check it's not getting hot during charge or heavy use (e.g. playing a game) to see if it's doing anything funny, but it's probably nothing.

Sudden shutdowns causes the battery app to go a little haywire. You would notice that the power instead of going down further would start creeping up. Its trying to recalibrate itself. And you could help it by draining the battery until the warning comes up, then charge it with the phone off. Once reach 100%, remove battery, and wait awhile, then put the battery back in and restart the phone. If battery shows 100%, you are fine. Else just repeat.

As for why it shuts down suddenly, that could be because of clashing firmware, apps not playing nice or just accidentally pressing the power button. Just have a look and see if it happens often enough to be a major problem. Worst case would be to do a factory reset.

I have the same problem on my s3, and it happened to me a couple of times, but I have noticed that it only occurred when the battery reach about 20%, while the bluetooth is on, and it's connected to the car.
