Help Suddenly my wifi is not connecting

Lurker
I've had my Captivate for about three months now and it's been working great the whole time. But starting about a week ago I began having trouble connecting to my network both at home and at work. The wifi icon bars appeared on the screen but I could never actually connect to anything. If I turn off wifi then it runs just fine over the air network, but I don't like eating into my data plan for no reason. I'll spare you all details of my inept fumbling and just give you highlights of my inept fumbling. After a couple of days of getting nowhere I did the following.

1. I've been on FROYO for five weeks with no problem till now but, what the heck, nothing else has worked so I flash back to 2.1-up1 that came originally on my phone. Problem is solved.

2. I accept the officially released update that ATT rolled out a couple of weeks ago. Problem reappears. Wifi bars appear but I can't really connect.

3. Flash to FROYO. The plot deepens. I am now able to connect via wifi on my home network but cannot get back onto my open network at work. In fact, whereas before the phone said I was connected, I am now getting automatically disconnected on every attempt to connect. There is not even a pretense of it working. I tried another open network in a public locale earlier tonight and same thing. It says 'connecting' and then immediately changes to disconnected. But at home it works fine.

I've got no idea why my phone is doing this and I've exhausted the limited amount of tech knowhow that I've garnered from this forum. I refuse to believe that I have to roll back to factory set 2.1 in order to continue using my phone. Does anyone have any ideas?

update, of a sorts...

My wifi magically started showing as connected again. However, it is still not letting me actually access the internet. So I still need help if any one out there has an idea.

You do realize that Android 2.2 has not been released for the Captivate and the only ROMs out there are hacked-up builds either based upon early beta developer code, or code for different hardware that people have tried to sort of make work on the Captivate? Both varieties have numerous known issues.

You'd be better off posting for support in the thread at XDA associated with the hacked ROM you're trying to use.
