Suggestion: I'm thinking moderator WIKI's, not knowledge base stickies.

You guys have a treMENdous amount of experience fielding questions of all sorts, and have provided an awful lot of history to Android along with methodology.

You guys try to embody a lot of that knowledge-base in the vehicle of forum stickies, which to me is really the wrong approach.

Parallel to the forums (not part of them) should be a Wiki maintained by moderators and hand-selected forum members.

Much of the content of older versions of those stickies is user generated.

Those stickies are available to all and with good reason. They contain guides and faqs to prevent the same question being asked and answered time and time again. Ontop of that it empowers the forum members with experience to control that content based on correct and relevant information that a moderator could not possible hope to maintain or manage.

These stickies embody the very nature of android forums as a support forum. Removing them would be a massive leap backwards and would create a huge bottleneck

Too many jump on the wiki bandwagon and I.for one can see no advantage to be gained

There are distinct issues here getting squeezed together. Let me separate them:

1. Open to all vs. Select few

It is certainly doable in any format. Open to all is a differing argument.

2. Removing the stickies

Having a Wiki in no way requires the removal of sticky if you see a value in that format. I would suggest stickies with links to wiki pages if necessary, but not in general.

3. Wiki providing no value

The point of a wiki is that it builds a structured set of information. User contributed, as with the forum information, but with a way of clicking to what it is you need to know. Even the most ardent fan of stickies would accept that perhaps "Things you need to know" (or titles with words to that effect) don't compartmentalize the issues, and having a list of more specific stickies is just that: a list. And within THAT list is either an unordered conversation, or a list of links to other threads of unordered conversations. Not an idea conveyor of information.

But if it's still appealing to you, then you would want a sticky with links to the wiki sections.

We've talked a lot about wikis.. That's up to Rob. I'll mention it to him on our next talk again and see where it goes. It's a good idea but would be a large amount of work.

Hey, ok, thanks. It is a lot of work to build all at once, but perhaps on an incremental basis it's actually what you've been doing all along?

In any case, thanks to all for hearing me out; I'm glad to hear it's been discussed before.

Take a look at the two stickies in the Droid Bionic forum. The attempt was to do attempt both approaches. One sticky is one approach. The other sticky is the other approach.
