Root Suggestions for which ROM to choose

Gingray

Hi

I have a 3 year old HTC Desire that I rooted today using the guide S-OFF and ROOT HTC Desire with Revolutionary.

My phone now has the super user on my apps list, but I am unsure where to go from here (it is currently at 2.2.2). My reason for rooting was to get more space to install apps (either by moving to the SD card or by removing bloatware) and to improve the battery life.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do next - do I need a ROM to do all this, and if so which one (and how do I do it, any link would be appreiciated). Also, what would I need to do to improve the power, move apps to the SD card and remove stock apps that I do not need?

Many thanks

Raymond

You will find the answer to all of those questions via the links in the root guide thread of this forum. Start with the root memory faq thread.

ROM choice is very subjective. What are you looking for in a ROM? Sense or not?

Hey
Thanks for that - I really have no idea what I want in a ROM, not sure what I should want. I've been told Cyanmod 7 is perfect for my phone, to be honest I don't mind if sense goes, all I really want is increased battery life and more app storage space.

To gain more storage you have 2 options:

Create an ext partition on your SD card (back it up first as it will probably wipe the card). Then install a ROM which supports apps2sd+

Or

Install a smaller ROM which will allow you to change your phone's internal partitions. Caution, getting the re-partitioning process wrong will brick your phone.

Or

a combination of both of the above.

Suroot's FAQ explains things far better than I ever could.

ROM choice is much more personal. CyanogenMod is a very popular choice. However they don't include any Google apps (not even the Play store) but these can be installed later. Also CM does not include any apps2sd+ scripts so you have to use link2sd to move apps to your partition.

Personally my favourite ROM was always Oxygen. I have copy of Oxygen 2.3.2 somewhere but in actual fact Mildwild has improved it somewhat. Mildwild based on Oxygen will move apps to SD ext partition by default and also supports the CM7r2 internal partition table.

My recommendation is:
Do a Titanium back up,
Run a full back up from recovery,
back up your sd card to your PC,
Partition the SD with Gparted or 4ext recovery as per the guides linked from the root memory faq.
Restore sd contents from PC,
Flash your chosen ROM (list of available ROMs),
install Titanium & from that app restore missing apps with data.

If any of that does not make Sense then just ask!
