Help Super AMOLED + burn in?

I'm about to splash 800$ usd for S2 next month but my concern is about the display which is touted to be the best how it will cope up with burn in ?

burn in? really?

i havent had one of these phones but my logic tells me there wont be bugger all.
if you THAT concerned, change the settings to turn off the display quicker...that why its there.
secondly (personally) i dont plan on having the screen pumping a bright powerful image non-stop sucking the battery faster....it will be cool to "out-do" my mates phones. but in general use, its just not needed.

Without Samsung explicitly stating that the oled subpixels have longer lifetimes, there's just no way to tell. There's plenty of information that would suggest it's better, just nothing to back it up.

Good question. I was tempted to use my Desire (OLED version) as a bedside clock but burn-in worries put me off. I've heard of some people with the top status bar burned into their phones, but as my Desire has always had Sense UI or Gingerbread (with dark status bars), this hasn't been a problem. In truth, it should be fine as I'd have brightness way down but still, it is a worry.

You prolly have a better chance of getting struck by lightning or the battery exploding than a burn-in problem. I've never heard of burn-in on a SuperAMOLED beyond just hypothetical, and only rare cases on OLED, which are iffy claims to begin with.

Burn in could probably come under the 1 year warranty, if not 2 year warranty covered under stat. rights.

I had status bar burn in on my first Captivate.

I stand corrected. :p But is it only just you? Is there a support group yet?
It's not just him, there were a handful of people with the first galaxy s line that experienced burn in of the status bar. I think they did some work to try to alleviate it with some settings adjustments in various updates dependent on the carrier, but who knows, it may have just been a handful of phones that would have experienced it regardless.

I have the slightest bit of image retention (or burn-in as it's called in this thread) where the time in my status bar is. You can mostly make out where the AM/PM is. Of course, this is only apparent on a bright blue screen which basically is a testament to the fact that the blue oled lifetime is relatively short compared to the red and green, and in this case the peak brightness of the blue subpixels in that area is noticably dimmer than the rest of the screen. Considering the time is white, it's driving all three subpixel colors and the green and red don't show anything. If they truly improved lifetime on blue like they hinted towards last Fall, it'll probably be less of a concern. I expect by 2012, image retention in oled will be a non-factor for smartphone displays.

This really is less of a concern than even plasma burn-in on modern plasmas. But for those unwilling to risk even the smallest possibility, the S-LCD screens are pretty superb in general (especially on the Inspire) and the Sensation will have one with higher res. I just went to the T-mobile store to check out the G2x (At&t was nearby so went and looked at the Inspire too) and I was wowed again by the Inspire's super sharp and bright screen, and to a lesser exten the G2x, probably because the purple wallpaper was less pleasing to me. The Captivate (and VIbrant, had a new back for 4G!) had that weird neon look I forgot about. You know, the off-color neon look when you view a really crappy LCD screen (TN-Film) from an angle and look at a solid color). This is probably just that excessive saturation again and heavily blue/cold tinge, which can really annoy me. The sharpness of course wasn't there because of the penTile, so it all kind of looks like light bleeding from the text on a pitch black UI. These are just my impressions though, and its probably just caused by my aversions to the color temp, which seems adjustable in the SGS2.

I just noticed that I do have burn in

It is very slight, but I can see the clock in the top right when there is a fullscreen app with a uniform colour there. Boo. (AM-OLED Desire)

just to comfirm, is this with your desire yes? (not the SGS2.)

Can't see any on my Galaxy S after a year or my i8910 after two years so this isnt something i'm concerned by.

Considering the premium i have to pay for this Smartphone i should not get any type of brun-in whatsoever, i've seen lots of galaxy "S" which exhibits this syndrome people who have no clue about burn in they simply just don't notice it and live with it, but still i haven't got any satisfactory claims to back SAMOLED+ is "burn-in free" if i see burn in on S2 then it will be a huge turn off from me.

if you dont notice it....how is it a problem?

in theory the only items "burning in" will be the small ones that are always there. its not like your wallpaper will create it (if it does you need to get a life and change it more often)
whos to say ALL other phones will burn in at sometime, some faster than others. this phone rocks, those who get "turned off" the second it cant do 1 thing another can or it fails in one area....good luck to you on your everlasting eternal search for that perfect phone....that you may own for what? 2 years? before looking for an new updated model.

news flash: NOTHING in this world is perfect. (well, other that my missus ass!)

You can never really completely get rid of the potential for burn in. A lot of it is self inflicted to, if you leave any screen on full brightness, with bright colors on it, for extended periods of time, you could suffer it, regardless of screen tech, though you won't have to worry about it as much as you had to 10 years ago with the plasma tv's, but the potential is still there.

I thought you were a chick, loony, you have a missus?

It's telling that the burn in I got is the most static part, the clock. I don't think we'll have an answer for the SGS2 for 6 months.

LOL.....whos says im not a chick? you have something against lesbo's?

im just gonna leave the true answer in your boys imaginations :D

Exactly! The reason why burn-in was a huge problem with early plasma TVs was because you would have an image (like the TV schedule's grid layout) burned into your ENTIRE display, which interfered with other things you were watching. Here, what do you have the potential to have burned in? The notification bar that's almost always there?

The user above with the OLED Desire didn't even notice his burn-in until he saw this thread!

The burn in will not happen unless you have some static picture or text on the phone for allot of hours. LCD screen burn-in has same problems. Just avoid using apps like clocks for nightstands that have static text. If the text moves around you won't get burn in on SAMOLED+ display.

The burn in of status bar on Galaxy S screens was because they used a grey/white background and it was there every time you turned on the screen. Since GS2 has a black bar and black UI that won't be a problem anymore.
