Root SuperSU binaries won't install

I am following this guide to root my HTC One M8. I just need root, I don't need a custom ROM.

I have gotten to step 7 (weaksauce). I can install weaksauce fine and it roots my device (at least, it says it roots it).

However, when I try to run SuperSU (downloaded from the Android market, latest version) it says "The SU binary needs to be updated. Continue?". It says this in my notification bar as well. I click Continue and it says "Installing, please wait. If you see this message for more than five minutes please restart and try again." After about 30 seconds, it says "Installation failed ! Please reboot and try again."

I've tried it multiple times with all forms of rebooting (adb reboot, holding power button, etc) as well as a factory reset (which put me back down to 4.2.2), however it keeps giving me this error.

What you'll need to do is load TWRP recovery up first, then flash Super Su from recovery.

The root guide is pretty specific about the process:

First download Super Su from here: [2014.07.27] SuperSU v2.02 - XDA Forum

Then follow the instructions in the guide to get it installed:

there is not much to explain with this one. if booted to recovery from above,use the recovery menu on your phone to:
*make a backup of your stock,unrooted rom. this is NOT an option! please... do it.
-wipe cache
-wipe dalvik cache
-install zip from sd card(chose your superuser file)
-reboot

*congratulations,youre rooted

*special notes on superuser i know that the link for supersu says the best way to install superSU is to download from the market. it is refering to rooted devices ALLREADY RUNNING SUPER SU.

an extremely common error is to not follow the above directions to flash the zip file in recovery,but to attempt to download and and install from the market.

THIS WILL NOT WORK

you will need to download the newest superSU from the thread as i describeb in the download section,and use the recovery menus to flash it.

Unfortunately you'll need to have TWRP installed to fully root your device, even if you don't want to flash anything different. Hope this helps.

yeah thats what i did - actually TWRP spotted the SU file and flashed it for me
...which was most cool as i was having issue with privs

Hello, I am new to this group as well as new to linux/ android. I bought a tablet that was rootrd and I did not know it. I read alot from groups like this and explored all of my system in an attempt to figure out androids structure. I am an old windows geek but want to learn android/linux. That said, after much reading, I downloaded kingroot in attemp to root my phone, in the mean time, I realised my tablet was already rooted so I downloaded superuser SU and I too cannot get it to download the binaires. I should have figured out my tablet was rooted when I foubnd that some applications could R/W to my EXSD and others couldnt.I have read somany options to get SU working Iam confused...lol Where I am now is this: Since I found my tablet is already rooted, I need to know if a back up is on my tablet, and how do I find out? If not what direction should I go to back it up? I then want to get Su running. Also, is there an online tutorial for android? any help is much appreciated.EDIT: Do I need to install superuser SU into SYSTEM IN THE SU SETTINGS?

Hi everyone, I am attempting to learn android/ linux. I have done alot of reading here and other groups. I bought a tablet and wanted to root it, so after reading much, I downloaded kingroot. While trying to install it, I realised that my tablet was already rooted, so I downloaded Superuser SU. I tried updating the binaries and used the tab "normal" only to get the meassage "instalation failed!, please reboot and try again" Didnt work, so I tried the Twrp/cwn tab and it did not reboot. I found that I already have busybox. Im just damne confused at this point because I have tried several things that do not work. help..... EDIT: Sorry for tthe double post, my browser did not show my first post and I thought I had lost it.
