Root Superuser/Titanium

I bought a second hand xperia play that had a superuser app so i thought the phone might be rooted so i downloaded titanium and was able to delete some games and apps that were pre installed on the phone but as i read a bit more about rooting your phone i decided to make the most of the phone and download adfree, hide it pro and rom manager but all three apps say i do not have root. so my questions are

1) is my phone rooted
2) how do you know you phone is rooted
3) do i possibly have to update my root

There are several apps on the market that can detect whether or not the phone is rooted. Search for "root check" or "root" or something like that.

Also, you may just need to reboot your phone.
