suspiciously high data usage?

Just got Samsung Galaxy S2 with 500mb data limit. As I get used to it, it's been home use only so far and connected to Wi-Fi. So I shouldn't have eaten up nearly 400mb of data in just 2wks right?
Any explanations or ideas? I've now turned off mobile data and restricted background data downloads, but surely this isn't right or am I missing something really obvious?
For example, my phone's telling me that Android OS has used 574mb on Wi-Fi but also 147 mb on mobile. Dolphin browser has used nearly 100mb too.
I really don't get it!
(PS for an Android forum it's really difficult to use on a mobile! )

Hi there, welcome to Android Forums! Are you rooted? If so, what carrier are you on?

Great thanks for the app link! Ok, what's rooted?

It's super user access, sort of the equivalent of Admin Access on a PC. One of the things you can use root for is block certain apps from using your 3G connection.

I could easily use 400MB in 2 weeks, but I use my phone a lot whilst out and about. You say you've just used it on WiFi, is it never out and about with you?

It's good practice to keep an eye on what apps you might have downloaded & what they're doing, perhaps something is trying to contact the outside world when your back's turned!? Perhaps you could try a different browser. Without wishing to slate them too much, dolphin browser had privacy issues in the past (now fixed, apparently). I've seen other apps updated that suddenly want partnerships with facebook, etc.

Sounds like you use the power control widget or notification bar. Previously I was able to configure both the notification control & the power control widget, which gave the option off WiFi disabling 3g / data. Now on a newer rom I find only the notification control is configurable & I still need to press the 3g / data buttons off when I put WiFi on. There are other power widgets available in the play store, of course.

Thanks, I'll google for more info on rooted. Just installed onavo and will keep background data connection off (really don't see why it'd harm usability so don't see why it should be on ). It surprised me that data usage, still seems to be like the untamed wild west!

Not yet switched to new number so this phone isn't yet being used 4calls so hasn't hardly left the house yet, so that's my main concern, if I'm on Wi-Fi why is my mobile data at it's limit after just 2 wks?
