Switched from Windows Mobile to Android

Greetings!

When my Treo Pro finally died, I decided to eschew a Windows Phone. I had been a loyal Windows Mobile user since before I ever had a smartphone - I used a Compaq iPaq PDA about a decade ago and that informed my decisions from the Hitachi G1000 (remember that? haha).

But it looks like the difference between the new Windows Phone and the old Windows Mobile platform was big and I am not sure how long Microsoft will be in the phone OS business, so I decided on an Andoid phone - specifically the new Samsung Galaxy S III for Sprint.

I know I will have a bunch of growing pains and here is the first: I use recurring appointments in Outlook Calendar for my work schedule since the days are always the same but the time my shifts start changes week to week. So I go in when I get a new schedule and change the individual occurance to reflect the correct time.

I have tried using Android Sync Manager and the included Samsung Kies but both apps do not sync these appointments correctly.

Is there an application that will handle this?

Essentially I am looking for the Android version of ActiveSync so it will seamlessly sync changes while hooked up on USB with my desktop in real time and handle these recurring appointments with details changed on individual cases.

What can I get?

This is the first of what will probably be a bunch of questions as I assimilate. Be gentle with me, guys... :)

OWA Android App (QOWA) Quick Outlook Web Access
Hi all - My organization locked down our outlook email so I tried every OWA Android app out there and none worked for me. They all required something open on the server end such as exchange web services or WebDav. There was no way to get my android to work with my email except the browser, but the logout was every minute, requiring a retype of my username/password. If you ever used OWA you know what I'm talking about.

This QOWA is still using the native web interface so it should work with ALL OWA email addresses. This works very friendly with the touch environment.

Here is the link to the QOWA app in the marketplace. This works for Microsoft Outlook exchange 2003, 2007, and 2010.

Hello and welcome to Android Forums, neighbor! (I work in Phoenixville) :)

You didn't mention whether you are trying to sync an Outlook desktop client or the exchange server.

I use Google Calendar Sync to keep my Google Calendar and my Outlook appointments up to date.

Greetings!

To reply, I do not use an exchange server. I am old school and I synched old school: via USB. I have my own POP email but I was able to set that up without difficulty.

I am looking for the best app that can do what ActiveSync does: Sync Outlook Contacts and Calendar when it is connected to my Desktop, so it accurately and do so in real time (i.e. I add an appointment to my Desktop while it is connected and it changes immediately, or if not connected will change it when I connect next.)

I prefer free (who doesn't?) but will pay a nominal fee for what I need.

Oh, and I don't have a desire to put my stuff on Google. I realize that I can have my stuff in three places - handset, Outlook on my desktop and Google in the cloud - and have all of them synched together. I choose not to unless I totally have to because I am stuck in my ways but also I prefer keep things as simple as possible. Less chance of things messing up that way.

I think your only option would be touchdown.

That was one of my many disappointments with Android when I also made my initial jump (from Dell Axim x51v to GNote). Fell flat on my face and got pretty frustrated. Not being able to sync Outlok via usb without going through hurdles to find a workaround was a WTF moment. I also don't want to sync via Google. I'm currently using hotmail server to sync with Outlook. It's not perfect and I've hit a few bumps already with it.

I've installed My Phone Explorer to see what that's all about, but haven't really bothered playing with it just yet. I've heard it's not perfect solution either. And I'm getting the impression that most Android/Outlook sync software will be a hit and miss (ie. no real guarantees).

Welcome to the club... ;)

As an ex-WM user myself, I found MyPhoneExplorer a great substitute. It is free as well.
