Switching between 4G and 3G: can it be automated with a widget?

Hi all,

I am considering getting the 4G LTE version (GT-N7105) of the Galaxy Note II, on the EE network in the UK - but hopefully my questions apply regardless of the network.

I am wondering how easy it is to switch between 4G and 3G. Is there a widget or a toggle from the status bar?

I ask because switching between 3G and 2G cannot, as far as I know, be automated with a widget, and because I understand that keeping 4G on in areas with no 4G coverage is likely to be a battery drain, since the phone will constantly look for a non-existent 4G signal (4G coverage in the UK still leaves very much to be desired).

By the way, EE uses the 1,800 Mhz frequency for 4G and the 2,100 for 3G . I am mentioning this because I read somewhere that the way 4G is enabled or disabled differs between the US and Europe (different frequencies), but I am not sure how true it is.

Thanks!

Battery drain is a big deal for me. I am currently trying Connection Cheker and it seems to be making a difference. I've noticed at the end of the day I have more battery life left than when I first got the phone.

You can always do it manually too. When you are in an area you know doesn't have 4G you can use Extended Controls to toggle back and forth.

Hope that helps.

Thanks. Connection checker sounds interesting but it doesn't really work for me because reconnecting disables bluetooth, which is a big annoyance since I always use a bluetooth headset.

Good to know that 4G can be disabled with a widget. When you enable/disable it, is there a long period when you have no data and no signal?
