Help switching from between 3g/4g when there's a data request

Guys..

When I had Stock Android 4.1.2, the 4g was always on and fast. I have t-Mobile.

When I put a rom on it (Cyanogen Mod) with Android 4.2.2, the 3g/4g speeds seem to switch alot..

At first, i thought it was random and there was something wrong. But I think the newer version of android was designed this way.. It stays at 3g, UNTIL I request some data then it switches to 4g.. Maybe to save battery? Well, a cool feature I guess.. But my wife has the same phone and I did a speedtest.. And while her phone stays in 4g it has a fast ping and the download bandwidth is slightly faster.. When I did my test, it took about 3 seconds for my phone to switch to 4g, the latency was a little slower and the data speeds were slightly slower as well..

Is this a new feature in Android 4.2.2? I can't find any documentation online about it. Do you know if there is any to force 4G to always stay on? (Unless of course I am out of a 4G area)

Well, I found this on another forum:

"It's a feature not a bug.

Most non-AOSP ROMs show "4G" all the time when actuality it constantly flucuates between 4G (HSPA/HSPA+) and 3G (UMTS).

The radio's natural idle state when in a 4G area is 3G. CM simply shows it switching up to 4G when data is moving across it.

The non-AOSP ROM's do this to avoid confusing people and let the carriers keep their faux-4G branding intact."

That doesnt explain the speedtest results though :)
True what they say about the "faux-4g". 4g is same thing as LTE. Hsdpa and hspa+ are 3g

Yeah true.. We had verizon LTE, but it was very slow in our area. When we switched to T-Mobiles "Faux-4g" it was 10 times faster.. And I know t-mobile just rolled out LTE anyway.. Don't think the S3 supports LTE right now for tmobile..

Think youre right mate. The US carriers confuse me tbh lol but think i read that T-mobile USA are gona bring out an lte version of s3

I'm starting to think that we need to just stop talking about data in terms of 2g/3g/4g/LTE all together & just refer to it as data & post your average speed.

The terms just seem to be more & more pointless.
