Switching From iOS

I'm new to this forum, so I'm not sure if this is the right section to post this sort of question, apologies if it isn't.

I'm currently using an iPhone 4S, and looking at switching over to Android, the Galaxy SIII is the handset I'm presently looking at. I have a few questions prior to buying one though:

1. How long does the battery last with light to moderate use?

2. Is it uncomfortable to hold in one hand over long periods of time?

3. Does the screen get scratched easily? (I'm not a fan of screen protectors.)

4. Will it be updateable to Android 4.1 in the future?

Hello dave I do not own this device but I can answer a few questions you have
From what I've seen it is NOT easy to scratch the s3 I've seen a video of a guy taken knives to the screen and not leaving a mark I'm unsure of what android version it launches with but jellybean will probably be in its sites battery use best bet there check the Mah of the battery it'll give you a rough estimate and last design from what I've seen it look moderately comfortable in the hands :) I hope this helps maybe someone with this device can answer these questions better then me :) :ciao:

hi and welcome to AF...

1. about as long as it can.. based on use and cell signal. in general it should last a full day with "light and moderate" use.

2. you should get used to it. unless you have really small hands. women seem to do just fine. (even asian women :P )

3. same as the 4S.. if you did not have issues with that phone, then this will be just fine.

4. yes.. i think 95% it will officially get the update. but 100% sure it will from dev community.

This is my daily driver, so I'll give you some first-hand answers.

1) It lasts all day and then some during work. Light-moderate use, games on break, browsing during lunch. It's off the charger at 6:30am, and when I get home at 5, it's well above 50%. You will have no trouble making it all day if you don't use graphically intensive games all day. Then, you'll get 3-4 hours max (like all phones)

2) No. It's a bit big for me, but very ergonomic. The back is fairly slick, so I recommend a TPU case.

3) No. Gorilla glass is fantastic. No visible scratches in just over a month.

4) Absolutely. It's a flagship device, and the update was announced last night at IFA.

1. How long does the battery last with light to moderate use?

It lasts the whole day for me most of the time. It's hard to say whether or not your definition of light to moderate use is the same as mine.

2. Is it uncomfortable to hold in one hand over long periods of time?

It is comfortable to hold in one hand for long periods of time. The SGS3 is rather light. However, the large screen makes reaching the opposite corners of the screen with your thumb difficult if you are using the same thumb as the hand you are holding the phone with. For most tasks, this will not be an issue, but you may find it awkward on occasion.

I personally find the large screen makes typing in landscape mode a little awkward as I do have some difficulty reaching the letters that are in the centre of the keyboard. I switched to using Thumb Keyboard which is an alternate keyboard. It has a keyboard layout that is split in the middle so my thumbs do not have to reach so far into the centre of the screen to type.

3. Does the screen get scratched easily? (I'm not a fan of screen protectors.)

I haven't scratched mine after a month. I do not use screen protectors. I do carry the phone in my holster and pull it out when using it.

4. Will it be updateable to Android 4.1 in the future?

Samsung has announced that Android 4.1 will be coming soon to the SGS3.

As an owner of two Samsung phones, I can say that the screens are well built and will never scratch. You will never need a screen protector. You probably don't even need a case to protect the back. And yes, the S3 will be updated to 4.1 Jelly Bean. I believe that has been officially announced.

other than SAND... 99% of most things that touch the screen (most of today's new smartphones) will NOT scratch it.

Glass is naturally hard and resist scratching. then Corning developed Gorilla glass that is even a little more scratch resistant (NOT scratch proof).

my phones screens are naked.. but i am scared of sand! so keep it away at all cost!
oh, and dont keep hundreds of loose diamonds in the same pocket as your phone. I learned that the hard way!

Interesting thread this one, having come from an iPhone, a very scratched one I decided to use both a screen protector and a case with my Samsung Galaxy S3. Better to be safe than sorry.

The battery life on mine lasts from 6.30am to 9.30 at night at which point its on around 50% from a day of reading forums, checking email, watching a few YouTube videos and taking a few photos.
