Help Switching phone

With TMo. They are fussing about band 12 and VOLTE. I only buy unlocked phones, and usually don't care about speed, frequencies.

I'm interested in this phone and another Motorola. What no one tells you is the whole tale on options.
I have a Find 7. I can switch from LTE to lower bands on the phone. The phone will not find an LTE signal according to LTE Discovery app. If the higher bands are enabled, the phone will lock on LTE. Do the Motorola phones also have this choice? I can't find it anywhere.

The Oppo is not in sync about what TMO uses. If I select Auto (2,3,4G) it finds Band 4 LTE and locks on it.
If I switch to auto 2, 3G, it finds HSPA, HSPA+ and ignores LTE. It does work well, even if confusing. We have an altitude problem here, so some places I do have to switch if I want data.

I'm from the old school when TMO had no signal in many places. You just turned off the phone and/or used the old wifi calling on TMO phones. Now, with the kid living in the UK, we use Viber and that's data.
If she has an emergency, I'd prefer to get the call. I do know about the bars and wouldn't expect VOLTE if the phone doesn't have it which is the big hangup on Band 12 phones.

She will need a new phone for the states. Her old Nokia C6 worked off Edge here.

I do not want a TMO phone or a Nexus and she lives in the UK and doesn't need a TMO phone.

I don't know of any way to manually switch from LTE to lower bands with the Moto X Pure Edition (MXPE). Here's a discussion on another forum about Band 12 being disabled on the MXPE and a report that it will be enabled in a future software update. Also a report that it will have WiFi calling and Band 12 with VoLTE in a post-release patch. I am skeptical about these reports until they actually show up on my phone.
