switching sims cards

I have an old Samsung S8 locked to a Verizon account. If I buy a new unlocked Samsung S21 CAN. I put the sims card from my old phone the S8 into the new phone and keep my number and my plan. Do I have to tell Verizon anything?
For some reason I have seen some odd answers. Is this something people don't do?

i'm going to be doing this when the Fold 3 comes out. so my situation is a tad different then yours. i have a note 10+ on verizon. my boss just recently took over my bills for the phone....in other words the phone is now under his business account with verizon. the only real deal out there right now is Best Buy for the Fold 3 but they do not deal with business accounts. verizon is selling the phone but with no discounts plus they were selling the unlocked phone at $100 more than Best Buy. while i was at Best Buy, the sales associate told me that i could buy the unlocked version and just switch sim cards. i thought that was a great idea, but there was no samsung credit and their buy back for my note 10+ was not as good as Samsung's store online.

soooooooo, that is what i did. i pre-ordered the unlocked phone on sammy's site and when the phone gets shipped to my house all i need to do is just drop the sim that is currently in my note 10+, boot it up and then sign in. should be very easy for you to do the same.

Odd answers may be due to the history of this stuff (one of the problems with web searches is that they can easily turn up out of date information).

Verizon used CDMA technology for its 2G network, and derivatives of that for its 3G. Those technologies don't use SIM cards, so for a long time you had to register a phone with Verizon in order to use it on their network (which of course meant that VZW could choose whether to allow you to do this or not). But the 4G technology, LTE, is based on the GSM standard, which is where the SIM card came in, and the whole point of the SIM is to allow you to move your connection to a different handset by swapping the SIM card. And my understanding (mainly from VZW customers in this forum, since being European I have never had a Verizon account) is that Verizon have not done anything to stop you doing this. But the fact that for many years you could swap SIMs with other networks but not with Verizon (or other CDMA carriers) might be the reason why you found mixed answers in your searches.

Thank you both. I mean both you that answered me. Now I have a much better understanding of what the sim card is for. I'm buying an unlocked Samsung S21 Ultra from Amazon and then putting the sims card from the phone I'm using now in it. Both you made this easy so thank you again
