Switching to Android because of ICS

mzaur

Newbie
Hi guys,

I've had a 3GS for a while. Looking to upgrade but the 4S is pretty disappointing. After investigating Android for a while, I'm now very impressed with ICS and want to switch over and give Android a try. The new Galaxy Nexus also looks great with no physical buttons, though the huge screen size does worry me a little.

I'm looking at the SG2 but worried that it'll take too long for it to get updated to ICS, and I don't really want to use Gingerbread.

When do you guys think ICS will come to AT&T android phones? How long should I wait? Will the Galaxy Nexus come over to AT&T?

Cheers

AT&T doesn't have the best track record for releasing updates in a timely manner. So unless the phone you are looking at buying has ics don't plan on having it anytime soon. The infuse owners are still waiting for gingerbread.
The captivate was released July 2010 and there were promises of the froyo update for months and it kept changing. Finally froyo was released Feb 2011 like a week before the inspire was released which had froyo preloaded. And the inspire just got the GB update not too long ago.

Thanks. The main reason why I want to switch to Android is because of ICS. Is it possible to unofficially install the updated OS on your phone?

You could root your phone and flash a custom rom based on the os you want to use. Of course this only applies if someone has created a root method and developed roms for the phone you get. Some phones are easier to root than others.

Unfortunately, AT&T is pretty late when it comes to releasing updates. They have phones that don't even have Gingerbread yet (e.g. LG Phoenix). Based on Samsung's Galaxy Nexus page, I believe a version with support for AT&T 3G will be released. However, I just don't know if AT&T will carry it subsidized.

Of the phones that have already been released, the Nexus S (AT&T version $50 at Best Buy with 2-year contract) will likely be getting ICS first since I believe the update comes straight from Google. However, hardware-wise, it's already pretty long in the tooth.

What makes you say this? I'm really hoping the Nexus gets released on AT&T.

I am thinking an subsidized version will hit att but not for an very very long time , like maybe may 2012. You can buy an world gsm version probably unsubsidized with in an month or so , but dont know if i want to shell out 700 dollars for an phone
