Switching to AT&T from Verizon

I'm finally ready to give up my unlimited data and ditch Verizon. My girlfriend currently has AT&T so I want to just combine her line and get us on a shared plan. My question is, since I won't have the monthly savings advantage of a prepaid what is the cheapest way to set that up? Should I just sign a contract get a phone from AT&T and then sell it to pay for the N5? Since she's on contact and we go shared I'll be stuck for 2 years anyway. Thanks in advance!

I don't have an answer for you but it's a great question. I would like to go to a shared plan in the future for our family but I don't want to have to pay for phones in the contract price that I won't be using. I'm also not really crazy about the process for selling the phone but I don't live in a major metro area. My wife and kids are on prepaid plans which cost $100/year (they generally have WiFi available). I'm on an AT&T 2-year contract plan which isn't bad but no longer exists. AT&T and Verizon are really good at monetizing their customer base.

I am personally going from a Verizon shared plan with my wife to an AT&T prepaid plan. Right now for the two of us I am paying $60 plus $40 smart phone access for each line totaling $140 plus fees a month for 2GB shared data and unlimited talk and text. When we go to AT&T I will be paying $60 per month prepaid for unlimited talk and text and 2GB data individually. So I will be saving around $20 a month for the two of us. Then I will also have the freedom to upgrade whenever we want.

I don't need unlimited talk and text - actually very little - so I'd prefer a plan with limited voice and text - which Verizon and AT&T no longer offer. Basically everything is unlimited talk and text now.
