Switching to Verizon

EcoOne

Newbie
Hi guys, Im new to this forum. Im switching to Verizon next week, and I having a hard time choosing a phone. Im with Tmobile now and have a Mytouch 3g that I really need to upgrade from, its becoming hard to find a fast and stable ROM with the lastest features. I have a few questions in regards on which phone I should get on Verizon

1. Should I get a high end 3g phone, like the Dinc 2, or a 4g phone? My area does have 4g coverage, but Im wondering if it would be better too wait for more and better 4g phones to be released. I get a new phone about every year and a half.

2. When will 4g become standard? The Droid 3 is gonna be released soon, and rumor has it that it will be a 3g phone. It seems that the early 4g phones are just testers. I remember how 3g started in '02, but didnt really boom til '06-'07

3. How much of a difference does dual core really make? Heck, coming from this Mytouch and its 500mhz processor, Im happy with any upgrade, but what will become the standard first? Dual-core or 4g? And I mean real 4g, none of that HSPA+ crap

4. Will Skype ever allow video chat on Android? Ive seen it on the Thunderbolt, but will something like the Dinc2 get it? It doesnt have to work on 3g, Wifi would do, although 3g would be a plus

I may have a few other questions sprout up. The battery life of the Thunderbolt doesnt bother me too much, so thats not a deciding factor. The price of the Charge is alittle too steep for me though. Im really leaning towards the Dinc2, I just dont want to have hardware that becomes obsolete 3 months after it comes out. Im very into the android development and rooting community, so Im usually pushing hardware to last as long as possible and be up to date with the latest technology (this is especially the case with my laptop, damn you new cpus and gpus). Thanks in advance for all the answers and suggestions

1) Peer pressure states that you should get a 4g phone, but logic states that if 3g is working for you, then you should choose the phone that most perks your interest regardless of the number before the g. Personally I would look at the overall specifications of a phone and ask myself the most important question I can think of, "Will this still be relevant in two years?"

2) I think most of the major carriers have plans in place to have their 4g network coverage completed in the 2012-2013 timeline. As for being standard to the point of seeing 3g devices disappear, I wouldn't have the slightest and hopefully somebody else can shed more light on that.

3) So far the general consensus is "not much". Most of what's out there was built on a single core and has no clue how to take advantage of a dual core. Coming back to the question posed in #1 though, I can't see it being a bad idea to have one as Android versions up along with a good portion of the apps.

4) I don't use skype, so I can't even speculate sorry!

Last time I looked the Charge and Thunderbolt were the same price? I guess I should have read the closing paragraph of your post before answering number one, it seems like you already have the future in mind. I'm running a lowly little Eris but I know there's a good section of these forums that still rock the original Incredible; seems to me longevity like that for the first gen should speak to the possible longevity of the second gen.

Fly in the ointment statement: Verizon is changing data plan pricing on 7/7, Droid 3 rumored to be released 7/7. Whatever you decide to do, if unlimited data matters to you, do it before 7/7 and use you 14 day return policy if you have to!

Yea, thats why Im doing it the upcoming week. I just gotta have unlimited data, Im not trying to get sucked in to any additional charges with this tiered bull crap

I figured that was your plan but you mentioned the Droid 3 specifically...and that may or may be available prior to the change...most likely not from everything I've seen.

Yea, I only mentioned the Droid 3 as an example of a well anticipated device that is not going to be 4g. I expect the Bionic to be released soon after
