Swype has lots of non-word words in its dictionary!

I have TONS of words in Swype that are not words, and I did NOT enter them! It's really annoying. Can someone confirm if they have these "words" in Swype:

weil
njit
ven

... there's lots more, but these are the only ones I remember off the top of my head. I feel like I'm playing Scrabble with someone who uses those esoteric words borrowed from other languages.

I would LOVE to know how why these words are in here right off the bat?? I've never written them! I get a lot of Swype prompts saying word X was "hidden" by word Y, where Y is some ridiculous non-english word!

BTW I did a factory reset for an unrelated problem and these words appeared after the reset, so I'm certain they're part of the default Swype, at least on my phone.

Samsung Galaxy S, was 2.1, now 2.2.

I couldn't get any of those 3 to swype.

If you manually type a word, it'll add that to the user dictionary automatcally.

That might be what you are seeing, but the factory reset should have wiped that out.

I wish there was a way to disable that and only add words you want added manually.

Thanks for checking ...

Ya I definitely didn't add those words manually (you have to enter them key-by-key for them to be learned by Swype, and I would definitely remember entering those).

What version of Swype do you have? Settings > Applications > Running > Swype. Mine's 2.10.52.13630.

This is not quite true. Anytime you swype a word and a space gets added after it, it gets put into the dictionary.

Huh? If you swyped it, it's obviously already in the dictionary.

Yes, I know you can delete user added words from the dictionary, but that's a pain. I'd wish swype didn't automatically add words you type out. I make a lot more errors typing out words than I do find the need to add words to the dictionary.

I have all sorts of misspellings in my dictionary now.

Every month or so, I just wipe out the dictionary and start again.

I agree, the spelling errors being added are a pain. We should have access to the dictionary, split into stock library and added library, with options to delete words.

Would make an already awesome plugin even better.

I also couldn't swype those words, but will keep this info for future reference when I come upon options I don't want in the dictionary.

Thanks for the info!

The problem you can ONLY remove words from the dictionary that you added. You can not delete words that are in installed dictionary. So you have to deal with esoteric words on occasion which you can't remove.

BTW, I think I found a partial answer to my original problem: I think Swype scan my Contacts lists and and all my contacts to the Swype dictionary! So when the word "njit" mysteriously appeared in my dicitionary, it's because I have contact for New Jersery Inst of Technology. This word masks "not" if I don't swype it exactly, so it's very annoying! OTH, sometimes you want your contacts to be easily swypeable.

Swype should really have a special gesture to switch between dictionaries: One to for the standard dictionary, and another for words from your contacts, etc.

Just my $0.02

I Truly wish that I could remove dictionary words from swype. Words like "thee" come up all the time, and rhett is another one. Perhaps it's something to do with my swype style, which likely isn't the most accurate, but it wouldn't be nearly the problem it is if words like these mentioned above weren't in there.

I would LOVE to be able to customize the dictionary, remove all the words I know I'll NEVER use, and then save that customized off somewhere safe.

FYI -- don't overlook Swype's own forums. IIRC the addition of words from your contacts is covered over there. If you're in the beta you really should be giving them feedback. That is the point of beta testing, after all.

I thought that too but I've found that that is not tooootally the case...

It seem that through fast and sloppy swyping or fast and sloppy typing I have UNBEKNOWN to myself, added non-sense to my custom dictionary on occasion. That is because with the latest version of swype, as soon as you hit the space bar, if the word isn't in the dictionaries it is added to your custom dictionary! I have only realized this LATER when I swype and the non-sense word comes up. I've said to myself, "where the hell did that come from??" and then go through the process to confirm that it WAS added to my custom dictionary and then I remove it.

Quite a pain!! :(

I have attempted, repeatedly, to delete "fiore" from my dictionary. It comes up every time I swype "for".

That is because it is NOT in "your" dictionary (i.e, not in your CUSTOM dictionary) but it in THE PRE-SET swype dictionary!! And as such, you cannot delete it. I just checked mine and it is there too! :(

There are various threads (some of which I started :D:D) which point out how RIDICULOUS this latest swype version is where words from GOD-KNOWS-WHAT-LANGUAGE is suggested or even REPLACES the word you attempt to swype.

http://forum.swype.com/showthread.php?1622-Let-s-List-the-WACKY-NONSENSE-ODD-Words-that-Pop-Up-in-the-Word-Choice-Window!!

http://forum.swype.com/showthread.php?2195-Vrouw-VROUW!!-WHAT!-!-Come-on-now-Swype!!!!

Word Choice/Suggestion show WACKY (non-English??) words?? (putt: pyotr, piotr, outre)

Dictionary is a MESS - Allow to EDIT (putt: pyotr? piotr? outre?)

For example, I swyped the word "putt" recently. The suggested words were:

outre, piotr, pyotr

!?!!??? :eek::eek::confused::confused:

Those are REAL words...I had to Google them :D But they are NOT words that one would think would be "top suggestions" for a swype!!

Even if you choose, like we all likely have, "English" as our language there are various words that pop up that are obscure and/or foreign/not commonly used words. Thought the developers saaaaay that "swype learns" from your input, there seems to be no ranking or no filter to either ignore or suggest LESS often these dumb, obscure words as you type the words you intended more and more often. I do NOT see swype "learning" as you type, other than "learning" new words added to your dictionary.

It is SHOCKING to me that the developers would release something like this, with allllll the testing and just COMMON SENSE and have the app function like this. And then to be TOTALLY SILENT about a fix or update...

I guess the ONLY thing we can do is voice our frustration here and at the Swype Forums Swype Forums in hopes that SOMEONE listens :(

The latest version of swype is 2.17.59.15552,this was the december update.

So I google the 2.17 version you wrote above and find some information. I also found the link to the OFFICIAL Beta site for Swype:

Swype BETA for Android UPDATE - December 2010

I KNOW the link still says "November 2010" but the page itself says December 2010 and has been updated that month. HOWEVER, the only info there (unless I overlooked it??) is for Swype v 2.17...

I'm in the Beta program but have "located" the apk elsewhere. I was wondering if you got your version 2.17 through the official beta or somewhere else??

THANKS!!

love love love swype...but new beta is horrible.

its great to have my contacts in dictionary...but some of the abbreviations in my contacts ALWAYS come up and cannot be deleted.

in addition there are too many low use words that get put in.

if DO gets put in as DIO one more time ill go nuts!

NO SETTINGS can fix this....

swype was GREAT on my Droid 1 last december! now it is almost unusable.

I did a little research...

If I'm reading correctly, it appears that the only difference between the previous 2.15 version and the 2.17 version is that the installer allows for different language version to be chosen and the availability of a "micro" version that is a smaller apk size allowing specific choice of languages (here, English/Spanish):

oh god. the word "thee" has become the bane of my existence. also the addition of the letter "r" on words that end in E. like "lover" "byer" "ber" "mer" etc.

Which version of Swype are you all using. The one I had before the EVo officially got it was wonderful. With the official addition of Swype from HTC, it is terrible. So terrible that I refuse to use it. Much faster and more efficient with the gingerbread keyboard on the market (I almost like that better than the very first offering of Swype I tried).

That made me laugh =D

Ahem, anyway, I would imagine since it's just a beta they shouldn't have an issue putting in a "remove from default dictionary" function.

On another topic, I got bored at work and taught the Galaxy Tab we have on display the alphabet, so when I have nothing to do I swype that over and over lol.

I'm laughing...NOT AT you but WITH you....well CRYING actually because I have similar issues!

Try swyping "OR"...I always, ALWAYS get "our." If I swype unnnnnder the "u" from "o" or "r" I get another word I don't want, if I swype ovvvver the keyboard to skip the "u" I get CAPS!! :D

Wow, NOT good to hear. I'm actually rooted so I'm haven't updated my phone OTA with the Swype that is not officially added. I can find a ROM that will update me but I'm purposefully AVOIDING it...not only because I do NOT care for the Blockbuster and other crAPPs that were added but I heard the Swype now officially in the EVO is worse/behind the current beta!

And if you thought that the swype version that was "one before the EVO was wonderful" then WOW ARE WE IN TROUBLE!! I find the version you speak of (2.15) WORSE than the ones before that with these non-sense words popping up. But if you thought the one with the non-sense words was BETTER than what you have now, I'm NOT liking the direction that this is going :(
