Did you reboot before trying to install?
Easy solution.
Go to the swype website and sign up for the beta, which is open right now.
On your phone, using Titanium Backup, backup and then uninstall your existing Swype.
Reboot your phone, then follow the instructions in the Swype e-mail, which you should be opening from your phone. Make sure you use the native browser and not something like Skyfire. Install the installer, and then Swype itself.
Works great.

This is a 'beta has expired' problem exacerbated by Samsung and AT&T once again not sending out a much needed update. Samsung has received the latest Swype for distribution. I am so glad I'm not dependent on either one of them for the system files on my phone. Is this just a root/rom people thing, or a stock 2.1, etc. thing, also? If this is a ploy to collect millions of e-mail addresses...well.... add that to the list of reasons I hope aliens destroy human beings.
