Sync Contacts from GMail

I always thought as long as a Contact wasn't in "My Contacts" in Gmail that it won't sync to my phone. However, if I have someone in a group, that whole Group gets synced to phone. Is there a way to limit to ONLY those that are in "My Contacts"?

Go to contacts>menu>display options> gmail then uncheck the groups you don't want to sync

I keep seeing this answer given everywhere, but it is incorrect. It controls only which contacts are *displayed,* not which contacts are *synced.* It's very easy to test. Set only one group to display. Then sync contacts. Then reboot. The "Contacts Storage" file is exactly the same size -- and you can search for and find contacts in groups that were deselected.
