Help Sync Contacts with Gmail

Yes, another great option is download an application to make this process easier. And there now is an app capable of working with gmail contacts...

The (Free) MIQ application can be downloaded in the market and it will then backup all your phone contacts to a private online account. (also saves sms, calender, photos and more if you would like to back them up as well) You can then log in on your computer and import your gmail contacts(or outlook ect.) to your account. The contacts will automatically push to your phone!!! This is a great way to backup your data, manage your contacts, and switch between phones with ease!

Hope that serves as a good solution. Good luck!

like previously mentioned, that's the problem - the option isn't there

Did you register your GMail account with Android? Check this article on Samsung support site.

If you connected your phone with Gmail account, then when you are creating a new contact on the phone you should have an option to specify that this is a Google Contact and this contact will be pushed to the cloud.

he only problem I have is that groups from GMail contacts are not transferred/synced to the phone. On the phone, all contacts transferred from the cloud belong to group Google. It kind of makes sense since the phone may aggregate contacts from different sources (one of them being GMail) but I would like to have an option to do have fully matching groupings on both phone and cloud.

OK, I've been reading this with interest, and seem to have a slightly different problem on my Galaxy S.

My contacts were set up in Google from the outset (as I found that to be the easiest way to get them from Outlook), and synced to the phone perfectly. Since then there's been some weirdness !

If I add a new contact as a "phone" contact, it registers fine on the phone but obviously never gets to Google. OK, so add a new contact as a Google contact you say ? Tried this, and what happens is that it seems okay, I can see it in Contacts, but then it syncs and the newly entered contact disappears (and the total shown at the bottom of the contacts list drops by one too), and doesn't reappear anywhere at all.

So far the only workaround I have found to this is to add new contacts as "phone" contacts, and wait till I'm back at a PC to re-enter the same details into Google so they'll then sync to the phone as google contacts, but this is a bit of a faff and seems to defeat the purpose of syncing somewhat - one way syncing is not much better than useless.

The only slightly unusual thing I can think of is that after setting up the phone with my Google account details, I was offered and took the chance to change my account to @gmail.com rather than the @googlemail.co.uk that I had been using. I thought about deleting the Google account registered on the phone, but it seems the only way to do this is to reset the phone to factory settings, which I'd rather avoid as I'm not sure how much work will be required to get it back to looking and behaving like it currently does (other than for contacts!).

Any thoughts anyone ?

Update. The more I thought about it, the moe I reckoned it had to be the Google account, as this seems to tie in with feedback on forums on other problems.

So, I took the plunge and did a factory data reset (note, a data reset from Settings--Privacy-Factory data reset, not a complete wipe and firmware reinstall).

On rebooting, it was back to its out of the box condition. On entering my Google account details my contacts and emails were successfully synced to the phone, and now they sync both ways - woohoo ! The only downside is having to reinstate all my settings and apps, but at least it's good practice for the hopefully soon to be released Froyo update :-)
