Sync non-gmail email without syncing gmail??

I have an LG optimus g pro with android v4.1.2

I want to sync my private non-gmail account without syncing my gmail account. Is this possible?

When I sync my gmail account it spams my contacts list with every single email address thats run through my gmail over the last 10 years. It absolutely absurd, I end up with like 1800 random contacts in my contact list. Why would anyone want this google?? Good one.

Android tells me that I have to sync manually everytime i open my private email because "auto-sync" is turned off under android's general settings. If i turn it on it automatically starts syncing everything including all my gmail contacts. I want to throw my phone through the window.

If there is a way to turn of gmail contact sync that might work but honestly i don't want my emails from my gmail account to sync either.

You can easily control exactly what you want (or not) to sync by opening settings and tapping on your Google account, then on the email address on the resulting screen. This will present you with a check list of items to sync, all checked by default.

Just uncheck whatever you don't want to sync (Gmail in your case) and it should then work the way you want with global sync enabled.

Yep. I froze Gmail itself on the phone and get it via POP3 or IMAP and Aquamail instead. I just check which accounts I want sync. I can have Aquamail sync automatically if I want to. I use Thunderbird or Claws otherwise on the PC.

I never synced contacts since I have other ways of dealing with them, and went into Google on the PC and deleted all the non-Gmail ones. I have friends that use Gmail.

Phone tells me I won't be able to control contacts. If I can get the VCF file to and from the phone, I do it myself.

Yes, use the stock email client (not Gmail) for the non-Gmail account.

It's configurable via the desktop Gmail settings; on the General tab, under Create contacts for auto-complete, select I'll add contacts myself.

Unfortunately on my phone. When I go into "accounts & sync" > google > gmail account, I see the list of all the different option (contacts, emails etc.) but the only choice I'm given is to "tap to sync now" In other words, If I have Auto-sync off for all my accounts then i can tap to have a one time sync of each options but there is no way to permanently turn each option off. Therefore when I turn Auto-syncing back on in the general settings, all gmail options sync globally. Conversely, I can turn auto sync off globally and tap my private email account for a one-off sync but do not have the option to have syncing stay on and have it push my emails without turning global sync/gmail sync back on.
