Help Syncing contacts has always been a pain for me, please help

I tried searching for contacts in this Samsung Infuse forum, and I could not find what I was looking for.

I went from a non-smartphone to the HTC Inspire, and now to the Samsung Infuse. I have gmail and "phone" contacts in my contacts list.

I guess I am really lost on the concept of how all of these work within the phone or else I could figure it out without doing this all manually.

I have all these linked contacts, but its the same number. For example. I am looking at "Aunt Carol". It shows the joined accounts of "Phone" "Phone" and "Gmail". I guess my biggest question is why is "phone" on there twice? If I seperate it, I just have "Aunt Carol" Twice. One with just "phone" and one with "gmail" and "Phone".

I have all the contact I need, just twice it seems.

Any thoughts?

I got rid of the gmail contacts....I don't know why (or how or when) I ever did that. I just logged in to my google account and deleted all fo those.

Now I just have to figure out why I have 2 phone contacts for these people.

I ask because my blue tooth isn't recognizing the names "Call...Mom", it will say "please say a command"....so I was thinking maybe all the contacts in here was messing that up. But that may be my car.

It might have happened if you chose to migrate your contacts using at&t's contacts function. That downloads your contacts saved on their servers to your phone, which probably already had contacts saved in the SIM card, resulting in doubled entries.

My advice to you is move all your contacts to Google and then delete them from your phone and SIM. You'll never issues with duplicates and you can even make Google automatically scan and merge duplicate entries into one on the desktop. Plus, if you have them saved on Google, you won't have to worry when you buy a new phone or if your phone gets stolen or breaks, you just have to log into your account on your new phone and all the contacts will be downloaded immediately. I'd also change the settings so that when you enter a new contact, the default is Google and not the phone or SIM.

Ok, one more question. (I feel like Columbo)

I have sync'd the contacts to gmail and brought everything back over. I basically just changed the display to not show any "phone" contacts anymore. Is it possible just to delete those entirely and purely go off the Gmail? I've ran through menu after menu on every screen possible and can't find it.

That's exactly how I have it set up (my entire contacts are all on Google, zero on phone and SIM). You need to set it so that the contacts on your phone and SIM are displayed while the contacts on your Google are not displayed. Now select and erase all. Then set it so that your Google contacts show.

I ended up doing this before I came back, but I do appreciate it.

I will tell you what I did though. I basically put everything in Gmail like you were saying, organized it like I wanted, and then went back to the phone and deleted all my contacts.....NOT KNOWING IT WOULD SYNC THAT DELETION TO GMAIL. haha!

The best part is that Google has a recovery, so I was able to recover what I had 10 minutes prior and then sync it back to the phone. My contacts look beautiful now.

Thanks! I'm recommending Google contacts to everyone. I never knew that was there, and I'm on my Gmail all day.
