Help Syncing Contacts

Ok, so I used to use a BB and knew how to back up my contacts. Now I have an Android Phone (which I love!!) When I set it up, I found I had multiple contacts on my new phone. I went to Google on my desktop and spent 3 hours cleaning up my contact list and only finished the contacts up to the "C's". What I did next I probably shouldn't have done. I tried to sync my phone with Google. With the BB, I could tell the software what took precedence over what, In other words, If I made a change on my BB, Outlook would be changed on the next sync. Well this didn't happen with Google, more like I lost a lot of contacts. What should I do, or need to do to prevent this from happening? Even better, how do I make one the default, so when I make changes, they transfer and not mess up?
Also, are my Google contacts that are on my phone, really on a server somewhere or are they actually on my phone?
In short:
1. Can I make one the default over the other? Phone vs Google
2. If I clean up my Google Contacts using my comp, how do I sync them all back to the phone?

STOP! If you are using a Mac, simply download the FREE app called A to G. The app may also work in the Windows environment (unsure). This app grabs all of your contacts from the address book and converts them to a file that you EASILY import into the contacts app located within GMail. Works PERFECTLY. As far as default Google or Phone, hit the PLUS sign in the add contact field and choose GOOGLE and set to default. All contact entries will be synched correctly to your phone AND the Google address book app immediately and automatically.

Why don't you simply continue to use Outlook?

I run my business in Outlook 2010 Business Contact Manager 2010 which syncs to the default Outlook Contacts folder.

I downloaded MyPhoneExplorer and sync my Outlook Contacts, Calendar and Notes to my SGSII with 0 issues. The first sync is a bit tedious if you want to select which contacts to sync or not, but once that is done it is a piece of cake and works perfectly. Freeware that is worth a 20$ donation via PayPal. MyPhoneExplorer saved me and allowed me to get this phone. Otherwise I was stuck with my old Windows Mobile 6.1 phone.

... and no I do not work for or affiliated with MyPhoneExplorer, it is simply the best solution I have found after researching for 3 months up until I got my Telus Samsung Galaxy S II X phone last Friday.
