Syncing Facebook w/o contacts

Hello. I turned off the sync function on my Hero so that I am not using the Facebook for HTC sense. However, I liked how I could sync just the Facebook statuses and pictures in my phonebook before I updated to 2.1. Is there a way to do that now without syncing the Facebook contacts?

Sign into facebook for htc sense and in the people app press Menu > View and untick facebook.
That should display profile pics and status updates for your contacts.
