Syncing GMail?

Is there a way to auto sync my Google Mail with my G1 hourly, but not sync my contacts? (They seem to erase sometimes)

I'm on 1.6 OS

I also have ATT email (my home DSL accounts) and I am able to use the Android email program effortlessly there- I can set to auto check 15, 30, hourly etc with no problem. Is there an option to do the same with Gmail? All I can find is to auto sync Contacts, Gmail and calendar. Since one time google ate my calendar and contacts, I'm a little hesitant to ever sync them again...

you can turn off the contact sync, but gmail is push type so there isnt really a sync you can set to hourly, it gets emails as tehy are sent.

look in settings > accounts and sync > google and turn off contact sync

(thats the path in desire so it may be slightly different for you)
