Help Syncing speed

I have my desktop open on my email, as well as my galaxy nexus and new s3 next to each other. As soon as an email arrived, the desktop showed, and seemingly instantly, the galaxy nexus started shining a notification about a new email. However it took a good couple minutes before the s3 clued in to there being a new email.

Is there anyway to speed up this sync speed, so that it is more comparable to my gmail on my desktop/nexus?

Also a bit strange: I enabled CNN breaking news alerts on both phones, and got one through on my nexus about 20 min ago. It never came through on the s3! Any thoughts?

Edit: this has come now, but over half an hour after it was delivered to my nexus! Huge delay...
