Syncing

I am new to the whole smartphone thing and just got my first droid.

I have looked on multiple websites to find out just what exactly 'syncing' does and I want to see if I am understanding this correctly.

When you are syncing data it is storing it on your google account. So if the data is lost you can retrieve it there. Other then that syncing really serves no other purpose.

So if I sync twitter and facebook then all of that data is essentially backed up on my gmail account so if things go bad I can get that data back or something to that effect.

I may be completely wrong but that is what I have gathered and I just wanted to check with the more experienced users here.

Appreciate any help!

I agree that is useful, but the way I use my accounts it is not as important as it would be for other people.

I really don't use my gmail at all so nothing important is going there and I mainly use my droid just to get social updates like Facebook and Twitter while I'm at work. And to check my hotmail which I do use.

But I think I understand the main purpose behind it now so thanks for the help.
