Help system error when loading Contacts

My wife has a brand new Samsung Mesmerize. Since day 1, she has been unable to load the Contacts app. it returns a system error in application style message (I don't have the phone in front of me at the moment and can't recall the exact text). She took it back to the store where the salesman stated that his phone does the same thing and opened a trouble ticket for it, and that was the last we heard.
I suspect that during the import of contacts from her old phone (a blackberry 8330, not that it matters) one (or more) contacts did not copy correctly. She is able to open the phone and start typing in contacts and the filtered list appears.
We have power cycled and hard-reset the phone, with no change in phone behavior.
Any suggestions?
thanks!

Whoever installed your contacts did it incorrectly.

What you have to do is factory-reset your phone (menu - settings - privacy - factory data reset)... this completely wipes the phone and you start all over.

Then go back to the US Cellular store and have someone else import the contacts from the Blackberry device to your Mesmerize. Hopefully (if the salesperson knows what he/she is doing) it will work this time.

Sync your Blackberry's contacts to Microsoft Outlook or a .csv file. If she still has Blackberry desktop on her PC, she can export the contacts directly from there as a .csv file onto her desktop. You can then import that into her Gmail/Google account (from a PC) that she used to register her phone. Her contacts will then be sync'd to her phone.

If that doesn't work, return the phone for an exchange.

USCellularAndroid....it was the store rep that originally imported her contacts off the blackberry.
She is desperately trying to avoid wiping her phone.

Any suggestions on apps that will make restoring all the 3rd party apps easier? back up app data?

LaTuFu...i do have her blackberry backed up 3 ways from Tokyo...on my windows pc, online and on my mac...plus on the phone still.

I will see if i can get her to relinquish the phone for an hour tonight so i can see what i can do.

thanks!

I should have read this more carefully the first time. It sounds like the sales rep didn't know what he was doing, since he managed to do the same thing to his own phone. There is no need to take it in to a store and have them do it, its not a dumb phone that needs a special cable. They're smart phones that are designed to communicate with Outlook, Gmail, etc.

When you say 3rd party apps...which apps are you referring to? How many are there? I would suggest an app like Lookout or something similar that will allow you to do a full backup of the phone.

Do the factory reset yourself, then reload everything yourself. Import her Blackberry contacts from the windows PC using either outlook or Blackberry desktop manager to export a .csv file to your desktop. You can then import these contacts to the Google account she's using on her phone. Bada bing...

I never let store reps touch my phones. I have yet to meet one qualified enough to know more about them than me. Some of their service reps, however, are quite knowledgeable and helpful when they're needed. Unfortunately its often because the sales rep bricked it...
