Help System Panel - Memory Used

There are three storage notes on System Panel:

Memory, Internal Storage (6661.8 M available) , and SD Card (7681.2 M available).


Memory says 71% used (and 117.6 M available) or 29% free.

What does this mean? I don't even have anything open except for Lookout in the background (antivirus and backup disabled) and System Panel on.

If it's ROM, how could I be using 71% doing practically nothing?

It's RAM. And Android/linux stores data from recently ran apps in RAM, saving time, proc and battery when you use it again. Unless you play any very system intense game, or are benchmarking, don't worry about it. Android can manage it's own memory just fine.

SD Card is removable memory

Internal memory is for apps and such. Once Froyo allows you to put apps on SD, this wont matter.

Close, but less confusing to refer to it like

And internal memory [ROM] is just like the SD card (except some apps don't see it) The apps partition is on the ROM, but most of the ROM is for general storage.

Intense games like Robodefense run smoothly and everything.

I just was worried that 71% doing very little could be a bad sign.

With 3g on, autosync, and a couple other apps running - it still shows at about 73%..

Very little increase.. interesting

Mine is running at 79%. With android free memory is wasted memory. The only performance cost with having high memory usage is if you start an application that needs a lot of ram, there will be some initial lag while the system deregisters ram from inactive or low priority programs/services. But after that, it should run just fine.

with *system panel (i think) you can change priority of apps ram use, though that could def run you into probs.
for me its "if it's not broke don't fix it" deal.

Couldn't have said it better myself. I've done more than these phones do on more limited hardware using very small distros of Linux. It is great at memory management. People should just learn not to worry about it. Being built off Linux is one of the best things Android has going for it (tied with being backed by Google).
