ROMs System Requirements for Custom ROM Building?

I'm just gonna go out and say it. When it comes to ROM development, I'm a complete noob. However I learn extremely fast, and once I learn, I make amazing things.

I love Android. I love Android hacking. I love the utilization of custom ROMs. And now, I want to love ROM development.

But maybe my computer can't do it? Not sure. It's an Acer Aspire 5000 from 2006 currently running Windows 7 Ultimate and I keep it in safe mode to run faster. It has 512mb RAM I believe.

What are the system requirements of developing a ROM?

Your computer can probably do it. Writing a ROM from scratch is one thing (compilers need RAM), building one from existing components is another. Try. If you need more RAM, it's not that expensive. Even a motherboard with an i3 and 4GB of RAM isn't that expensive.

You said compilers need RAM. Wouldn't I need compiling even if I'm not being original from scratch?

Also, I don't know anything about buying RAM. Nor price range.

I bumped up my VM on the computer to 4gb, would that work? Also, someone told me I have to run Linux... Well I can't get any Linux distros to work right so I'm stuck with Windows.
