Root system update and root :-\

Hi guys.
wasn't expecting to see this as thought that by unlocking through htc would prevent any further updates :-\
...assume if it does work that it will remove root?
thanks

You could ruu back to stock then take the update and re root and unlock especially if it has new radios. Just a thought though tho;)

mmm.... yes might be worth it.. yes the new radio did tempt me :-) not done a ruu before though :-\

Excuse me for my forgetfulness, but are you S-off Dan?

If you are, you don't need to relock and take the OTA. You can flash the new firmware package from the bootloader.

no probs Granite - thanks
unfortunately not....yet - its next on my list
that is good news indeed then - s-off and then accept this update then? cool

Yeah, you don't want to take an OTA because it needs the stock recovery to install it. You installed TWRP, so the OTA won't flash properly and it can bork your device.

Getting the updated firmware is really easy once you have S-off. Download the firmware package for your device, check MD5 sum, place on root of your SD and boot to the bootloader. It's done. :)

If you're S-on, you need to flash back to the stock recovery, rom, etc. Lock the bootloader through Fastboot, then take the OTA. Then re-unlock the bootloader, re-flash TWRP, etc. Big pain in the arse.

Lastly the new OTA may update the Hboot, which could close the latest S-off exploit. Sometimes it takes months to find a new one, if one is ever found. We've been really fortunate the last few HTC devices has got it so quickly.

hi Granite.
cool thanks for the great info.
planning to go s off as my next job.
then try and get this update, as keen to get the radio change.
then maybe viper ;-)

The new radios might be over at xda. And you can flash flash those in fastboot or ruu mode. Not sure cuz I'm to scared to flash radios haha. I did on my LG spectrum but I'm really cautious on my first flagship :)

Radio's are a little more stressful than a Rom flash. I can honestly say this is my 4th HTC device, and I've never had any issues flashing firmware packages. ;)

The single most important thing to remember is to check the MD5 sum for the download. Get into the habit of doing this for every download. The MD5 will tell you if the file downloaded properly and it's all there. :)

Hi Granite.
Cool thanks great advice again.
Are the md5 shown for the ruu downloads? Don't recall seeing them there
Cheers
Dan

I think I already know the answer to this but I'll ask anyway. Since I'm already running a custom ROM, if I update through the ROM would that upgrade my radio aswell or would I end up sticking with the radio that I first loaded the ROM on to?

Mustang is correct. Firmware isn't updated through OTA's from a rom dev. If you're running Viper rom, it will look like there is an OTA, but it's just a rom update. The Venom devs have figured out how to issue rom updates like an OTA, pretty cool. :)

If you're running a stock rom, don't take the OTA. You need the stock recovery to successfully accept an OTA. If you've got a custom recovery, DO NOT take an OTA. It could bork things pretty good. ;)

Cheers, that's what I thought. Looks like I'm gonna have to get S-Off then to update the radio!

Seems like it will be far easier than going back to stock and updating :)

Haha not yet, once ive a need to then i shall. At the minute my radio is working fine, no need to update :p
