System updated to 4.4.2 and now lost all ringtones

I have a Razr Maxx HD and when the cell updated to 4.4.2 yesterday I lost all of my ringtones and some settings. The ringtone loss wasn't such a big deal but when I downloaded new ringtones and notifications to use on the phone I have them now installed on what I want them to be on but I found something odd about my notification sound when I get a text.
When I listen to the sound via alarms and in previewing it before downloading it the sound was REALLY loud but when its in my text messaging and I get a text message the sound it maybe at about 1/4 of the volume it is any other time.
I can't seem to find any way to turn the volume up for text notifications tho to increase it. How do I go about getting this volume turned up? I have tried my volume buttons on the side of the phone and ringing is at max and so is the media volume. So what am I missing here? Please help.

Try turning the volume up while you're getting a notification that you have a text message. The same volume buttond change different settings, depending on what's happening at the moment, so turning the volume up when your phone is ringing won't necessarily turn it up when you get a notification.
