Root System Updates "not available at this time"

Bought my MAXX HD 2 days after it came out and updated to Jelly Bean OTA as soon as it was made available by Vz. That was a mistake because I now want to root the phone by the only method available (reverting to ICS/root in ICS/VooDoo to preserve root/etc.) but can no longer get the phone to perform a check for system update in JB, which I would assume I would need to get back to JB. After the JB update occurred, the system update checker worked fine for several weeks and said I had the latest version. Now, when I have finally given up on a direct JB root method, the ability to get back to JB after rooting and saving root in ICS seems to be gone. I first noticed this almost a week ago: I go to Settings>About Phone>System Updates and get the response "Checking for available updates. Please wait..." for about 30 seconds and then "Check for updates is not available at this time. Try again later...."

Can I assume the check for update function will return once I revert to ICS? I do NOT want to brick this $300 phone!
