T-Mobile USA Data Plan

I just got my hero on T-mobile USA.
Can I get data service through T-mobile even though the phone is not officially launched by T-mobile USA?
If I can, would it work?

I have htc European GSM version to use on T-mobile USA.

as long as it is GSM and supports the same frequencies that Tmobile does in your area you should be able to use it. Just add the proper data plan for smartphones
