Tablet computer question

I am considering buying my first tablet computer, instead of another laptop, and am looking at one that uses android 2.2. I have never used anything other than Windows based computers, so wanted to find out more about android. When I researched info on various forums, I found a number of user comments that talked about problems with it, and with other later versions of android, including having their battery drain quickly, incorrect email operations, etc.
Should I be concerned about these things, and look for a tablet with some other version of android, or are these more like quirks that are not to be expected if I buy a tablet with it already installed?
Also, I looked to see if I could upgrade my tablet with the latest android version, and haven't found anything online that actually tells me how to do that, and if I can do it for free. Any help would be appreciated for this new (maybe) user.

Hello and welcome to Android Forums! :)

While many things can be done with an Android Tablet, you have to remember that it is a mobile platform. Many things we take for granted in a desktop OS might not be available. Simple things like printing or editing documents give people serious issues.

The bugs people experience are not universal in a version of Android as each one must be customized for the device it runs on. 2.2 (FroYo) introduced a lot of features that made the OS better including stability and performance. Of course, each subsequent version improved on that.

To update your device, if not supported by the manufacturer, you will have to find a developer who put in the time and effort to create a custom rom specifically for your model tablet.

as much as i like my tablet I simply would not give up my laptop. the tablet is great for internet, emails, and even media. however serious computing such as research type papers database management, and probably a lot more stuff I am not thinking to mention. the tablet is great for mobility. It just isnt ready to take on laptop/desktops just yet.

sent from my tablet :D

Tablets still have awhile to go before they completely replace laptops. I've been using my tablet for work and I still find that some excel spreadsheets that I deal with and work email functionality aren't conducive to enterprise type projects. I still find myself plugging my tablet into my laptop to tweak spreadsheets on a full version of MS Office. I've tried 3-4 different office type products for Android and none have the functionality I'm looking for.

What do you use your laptop for that you're looking for the tablet to replace?

Have you seen Windows 8?
I saw it on a tablet. It can do pretty much everything.

Windows 8 tablets running ARM processor (the ones that compete with android/ipad) will only run Windows RT metro apps. Microsoft is on record of this. The Arm based Windows 8 will be the majority of Windows 8 tablet sold.

Only the x86 cpu versions of the tablets will run legacy Windows apps. Those will be thicker and cost more. As much as ultrabooks - $800 and up.

I had a Windows phone up until March of last year. I tried sticking it out with them but Microsoft didn't seem to care about its mobile division so when I jumped to Android last year, I told myself no more Windows based phones/tablets for me.
