I thought those were for NFC but--S3 has that too doesn't it?

Perhaps the S3 doesn't have an antenna built into the back cover ... isn't it on the battery? You'd have to look inside an S3 to be sure.
In the back of the note are 4 contacts, as you see, 2 of them touch the cover for the NFC antenna, the other two are for the wireless charger Samsung hasn't released.

That's your NFC. Some carriers its built into the battery; others it's in the battery door.

Yeah the Note 2 has NFC on the back cover and the S3 has it built into the battery. I really wish they would have done that for the N2!

On Samsung's site you have to select your carrier when making a battery purchase so that you get the correct battery.

Some Notes, NFC is in the battery door; others it's built into the battery.

That's what I thought I have friends with the tmo and Verizon N2 and there's is in the cover like mine.
