Talk me down from the ledge

I've been eyeing the G6 as a replacement for my N6 (it must be the "6" ;) ). I love my N6. Hand's down the best phone I've ever owned. If they had an N6 2017 edition from Motorola, I'd be all over it like bad hair on our president.

It's got all the criteria I want in a phone. Larger display, Qi charging, Nougat, minimal gizmos, gadgets and other useless 'features' and even an SD slot.

I could easily get another year out of my N6, but G6 seems to be a good jump.

What are the cons? (I've read the reviews and they just don't seem to do much more than parrot the obvious) or is it just that good of a phone?

I wasn't impressed with the S8+, OnePlus3 or the Pixel. None of them had quite all of what I like in a phone other than the G6.

They aren't available in the UK yet so I've not had a chance to look at one.

That said, my personal impression (based only on internet information) is that it looks like a nice phone. Probably something I'd be perfectly happy with myself - my problem with large screens is the width of the device, which this aspect ratio improves. You can never really know for sure that there are no hidden problems until a phone has been out in the wild for a few months, but that applies to any new device.

It's almost certainly not on my shopping list, but that's because my requirements are different from yours - it falls between a couple of other options that I think are on balance better for me but neither of which would work for you. I'm paying a lot of attention to this stuff at the moment because my 4 year old HTC One is finally, in the last couple of months, reaching the point where the battery is becoming an annoyance, so I'm looking at replacing in the next couple of months.

I'd steer clear from LG handsets until whatever hardware issue they'll be plagued with shows itself and LG fixes or acknowledges.

Pretty much every LG flagship of recent times has had a manufacturing fault causing hardware problems. There's a class action suit against LG for the bootloop issues the G4 & V10 experienced and I'm led to believe the G2 and G3 all had common hardware problems in their early runs.

Fwiw, I'm on my 4th G4 (as I've pointed out in other forums, numerous times).

I hadn't realized that LG phones had so many faults (Hey, at least they weren't setting things on fire). I had an LG feature phone (The Shine) years ago and ended up giving that to my niece. And, of course the Nexus 4 made by LG which I still have and was a solid performer.

I think I'll take your advice EP and wait a month or so and see what shakes out. It's a shame because it does look like the phone that fits my particular set of requirements.

I got a birthday coming up in June ... ;)

Pulled the trigger today. We'll have to see if I was aiming at a bullseye or holding it to my head. ;)

I stopped at the AT&T store to touch a real live G6 and compared it to my N6 (maybe '6' is my lucky number?) The screen has a higher pixel density but is almost the same height and just a tad narrower. However, the phone itself is considerable smaller and very manageable with one hand. It's pretty, too (I got the platinum one) :D

It's got all the features I was looking for in a replacement, except the pure Android experience. We'll have to see how that works out for me, but honestly, I've been running stock and unrooted for close to a year and don't seem to be missing anything.

I looked at a few others, including the S8, but I'm just not a Samsung guy. I had an S2 ages ago (and the wife has an S7 edge) and that's enough for me to know I'm not a fan. The rep there was really pushing the S8, though, which makes me wonder what kind of incentives Samsung is giving AT&T to move them.

The G6 is the only one with the right mix for me. I'll probably have it by the middle of the week.
