Talk me into keeping my Maxx...

MWB123

Newbie
Greetings,

I've been a Maxx user for a couple of months now, made the switch over from an iPhone 4. The Verizon salesman did a great job of convincing me to branch out from my comfort zone and give Android a shot.

However, a few months into it, I'm having some serious second thoughts. I have no MAJOR complaints about the phone, it's just (still) not what I'm used to.

I am enjoying LTE and the larger AMOLED screen. But there's still not a ton that I'm incredibly excited about. Put it this way, when my iPhone-toting friends mock me for making the switch, I have a hard time explaining to them why the Maxx (and Android in general) is better.

My chief complaint is this...

The vast majority of my social life revolves around group text messaging. I have several going at any given time. However, ALL of them involve only iPhone users (hard to believe, I know). I came from this situation, to being the only guy with a Droid, which royally screws up their iMessage chats. Makes my life more difficult as well, because group messaging on Android sucks...plain and simple (yes I've tried every app in the marketplace, I'm pretty sure).

So help me make this decision before I make it. Am I missing something? Am I doing this whole "Android" thing wrong? Because I find myself, the majority of the time, really missing my iPhone.

Signed,

Confused Customer

Honestly, I would say that you've already given it a fair chance and not satisfied so you're better off switching back to the iPhone. Sure many of us love the Maxx or Androids in general but it's not for everyone. Just my thoughts.

Maybe you are not using a chat messaging app that will interface well with your friends Apple chat app. Look around and try another app. Good luck.

I appreciate the input, as this seems to be my sentiment as well. I don't DISLIKE the Maxx, honestly, I'm just not crazy about it.

However, I don't want to completely get rid of it and then realize I was missing some awesome feature or something the whole time. Hopefully someone with similar experiences can chime in.

Thanks for the reply.

I really feel like I've tried darn near every messaging app out there (within reason).

Just off the top of my head, I've used Handcent, GoSMS, VZW Message, and currently the only way I can effectively group message is through GroupMe. It works well for me, but not for my iPhone friends, because it changes the way their group messages appear.

And God forbid anyone include me in a new group message, because GoSMS (the stock app that I use) has incredible lag when deciphering group messages as MMS and re-threading them. It's ridiculously annoying.

My advice to you good sir is this, keep looking for a app that will solve your group messaging problems. It really is a great phone and FAR more functional than any iPhone out there. So many more ways to customize and enjoy your smartphone experience. Just keep trying man, once you find your solution you will be happy. Just look for the right app and maybe rooting your deice would also do the trick. Hope my little rant helps. :)

Thanks, but any suggestion on different messaging apps? As I mentioned above, I feel like I've tried all the decent apps already, and they all have the same basic flaw. The message is received as an MMS, then re-threaded into a group message. Because of this, it makes the phone lag and seem as though it's actually receiving two messages instead of one. Insanely annoying, especially coming from an iPhone where group messages come off seemlessly.

Now that I think about it, I probably should've posted this in the general forum. It's not so much a Maxx specific thread...more of an Android vs. Apple debate, I think.

I honestly don't know of any other apps you can try. You might do a few Google searchers and see what pops up. But if you honestly enjoy using an I Phone over your android, then more power to you. Just try some Google searches and dig around the forum here some more and then make your decision.

Just for purposes of pure speculation, how difficult would it be for me to find someone willing to trade my like-new Maxx for an iPhone 4S? Just from doing a little scouting around, it seems that the Maxx is held in pretty high regard in the Android community.

Since all of your friends are iphone users and you are the only one with a droid i suggest going back to iphone. Android and apple don't play well with each other so whatever apps they use for doing things together more than likely won't be compatible with you. If you had android friends it might be different. Sorry to loose you but back to the other side of the tracks with you. :-)

I think you're probably right. You have basically summarized what I've discovered in the last couple months...

Now I need to figure out how to get out of this Maxx and into an iPhone 4S, without costing me any money! :p

Really? This is what annoys me about Iphone users....and I know a ton o them. It's like they are in this special group of fraternity thinking they all have something that others can't afford.

Hellooooo. The Iphone to me is an outdated piece of equipment. Small screen, 3G, same non intuitive, boring OSX....I can go on and on.

If you want to be part of the "Me too"......."She has one, I have to have one", then by all mean, go back to the Iphone. Then you can sit there, look at each others phone and realize you all have the same looking boring phone with all of your icons stacked the same way.

I've realized that Iphone users are mostly people who want to perceived themselves as 'trendy', 'cool', and 'techie'. But coming from a tech background and working in the tech industry, I find the phone to be an over priced, over rated piece of equipment that can't do two simple things right......have decent call quality and doesn't have decent battery life compared to my Maxx.

Yes, the Maxx does have some quirks. But I realize most of it is software related. Because in the end, I want to be able to do things with the Android phones that I can't do with the Iphone. I want to customize my phone to how I like it, rather than be forced to do it one way or the highway.

But in the end, like one of the posters said, it's not for everyone. If you want simple, looks/acts the same as everyone else, no hassles, no worries, no thought processing, then buy an Iphone.

To the OP, this is not a direct bash at you, more like a shot across the bow to all the "Wannabe Cool Crowd" out there.

No worries, didn't take it as a bash. Matter of fact, I completely agree with what you're saying. Where I'm located, it seems like 2 out of every 3 phones you see are iPhones. I'm not crazy about that aspect of it either, but for my particular situation I think an iPhone would make my life easier once again.

I'm not dogging the Maxx (well, except the group messaging quirks, which is a software issue), I think it's a great device. I've given it its fair shake, over two months with it, waited on ICS, etc, and I think I'd still be happier with a 4S.

Thanks for your reply!

Honestly, its a matter of approach IMO. For Android, breaking free from tiered text plans was a big deal a couple years ago. Its why social messing apps like FB, Twitter, and Google Talk grew so big so fast. Group messing without carriers trying to gouge. Now Carries are trying to cap data, because nobody cared about unlimited text anymore. But yeah, texting isn't as big for Android. Blackberry Messenger addicts had some transitional issues as well iirc.

Having the choice of Apple, Android, Blackberry, Palm, Atari (just kidding:D...) is what makes our phones really great. I like the fact that you have tried and now have experience with both the 4S and the Maxx, in fact you probably know more than most of us from a practical experience standpoint.

I'd be curious to hear about your opinion after going back to the iPhone for a couple months - for instance, how easy was it to re-adapt to the smaller screen, LTE to 3G, etc.

Keep in touch!

I've never used iMessage, or any Apple software other than iTunes, but ran across this the other day trying to help someone else. MightyText - Send & Receive SMS Text Messages from Computer | Android Sync No idea if it what you are looking for though. I also ran across a few articles comparing iMessage to Whatsapp.

As far as Android vs iOS, I'm a firm believer in using what is best for you and not what others find best for them or think is cool. You shouldn't use or avoid a product based on someone else's opinion. That said, if you've got the time I've got some great videos for you to watch.

Have you tried an app called WeChat? It's available on all mobile OS for free, and is very easy to setup (using your phone number, email, or facebook). You can group chat with either txt or voice memo, send picture, etc. Actually it works similar to iMessage on iOS.

All my friends switched to this app (from google voice, iMessage etc) after I told them how awesome it is.

Craigslist. I'm sure someone would be willing to do an even trade.

Does it have to be a 4s? I have a 4 that is in perfect condition and hasn't ever seen use outside an otterbox

With the amount of money I have in the Maxx, I'd have to get a 4S or cash to feel good about it. I have a listing in the Classifieds section, feel free to check it out.

Thanks!
