Task killer...yes or no

I had ATK on my Cappy since I got it. I had read back then that Eclair did not do well with shutting off running apps. Each morning when I turn my phone on- I would launch ATK, and kill everything excpet Clock and ATK. Little did I realize that most of the Apps would auto-start!!!
I would turn on my phone about 4:30 AM and shut off by 9 PM- and I would get 4 days running like this.

Last week I read a thread here somewhere about why you should NOT use a Task-Killer. I charge up my phone last Thursday nite, and decided to run a test. I let all the Apps run and did not launch ATK. This time I just got 5 days out of a battery charge- shutting down 9 PM and turning on 4:30 AM.

I am not a heavy user of texts, but do occasionally surf with it and fire up the GPS to try Lock testing, etc. I do play Mahjong maybe 10 games daily.

By NOT using ATK- I gained a day of battery life- I would never have believed it.

I don't believe in Task killers. I think you burn more battery having things re-start all the time.

I'm on Froyo and I will occasionally use the native Task Manager to close an app that I know will not auto-start on its own.

I use one. Since AT&T bloatware starts up on it's own all the time, I find it helpful. It's made my battery life better. If I had a TMobile or a Verizon android phone, I wouldn't though since it doesn't have all the BS that the AT&T phone comes with.

First, welcome!

See this page for a way to "freeze" AT&T bloatware to prevent them from running. Then you can ditch the task killer. Don't let the title of the link fool you. Navigate to "Deactivating apps with Titanium Backup" within the link.

Thanks for the link. I'm coming from blackberry and was well versed changing blackberry software, but the rooting and rom changes seems much more dangerous. Not sure I want to brick my phone or risk voiding my warranty.

I've heard that setting it to Auto kill is bad for your phone. Is this true??

If you get a good feeling / sense of satisfaction from killing apps I don't see the problem with it. Like everyone above me said though, don't do it if you think its a necessary function for your phone to be able to run smoothly; it's not.

And what you should avoid at all costs is the "Auto kill" you asked about. Not a good idea, because (again, as said above me) a lot of pre-loaded applications are just going to go through the process of auto-starting back up again, wasting your battery.

If you're gonna use a task killer at all, manually check off the app or apps you want killed.

I understand your reluctance to root. That said, without root privileges you'll not only be unable to freeze apps via Titanium, but will also be prevented from performing meaningful backups with not only Titanium but also MyBackup Pro.

The risk of bricking your phone is certainly there, but it's minimal. If, in fact, you do need warranty service during the first year of ownership you can always unroot the device.

Clearly the decision is yours. I'm simply attempting to assign a risk/reward ratio to rooting.
