Tasker won't repeat Autosync

funkoot

Newbie
Hi. I am running a HTC Legend (2.2) Android phone and have just updated to the latest version (1.1) of tasker. In order to save battery power I use tasker to autosync my gmail account every 20 minutes. This used to work with no problems last year but I lost the profile. I have tried to re-enter it under the month/day and then time context whereby autosync is turned on for 3 minutes and then turns off. Everything works well and autosync comes on for a single instance. However, when I check the 'repeat' box in the time context, autosync does not work.
Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong. Thanks in advance for your help ladies & gentlemen.

If you're using a time context, and turning Autosync on in the Enter Task, Tasker will turn on Autosync at the beginning of the time period (once) and turn it back to the way it was at the end of the time period. With a repeating time context, there is no Enter Task or Exit Task, there is just a task (it runs, but the changes are never undone automatically by Tasker).

What exactly do your contexts and tasks look like?

Hi Unclemike and thanks for your prompt reply.
These are the two tasks that I have set up to autosync

This is the one that works (no repeat time context)
I have two contexts as follows:
Context 1: Date:August,September,October,November,December
Context 2: Time;From :7.00 - 7.05
There are also two tasks that sit alongside these
Task 1: Autosync 'On' (has green arrow pointing to the right)
Task 2: Autosync 'Off' (has red arrow pointing to the left, so I am guessing that this is an 'Exit task')

This is the one that does not work as it has the repeat time context box ticked. with this task enabled Tasker does not execute at all.
I have two contexts as follows:
Context 1: Date:August,September,October,November,December
Context 2: Time;From :7.00 - 7.05. Repeat every 15 minutes
There are also two tasks that sit alongside these
Task 1: Autosync 'On' (has green arrow pointing to the right)
Task 2: Autosync 'Off' (this one also has a green arrow pointing to the right, so I am guesign that there is no 'Exit task' for this task)

To be honest I don't expect the 'repeat' context to work as the dialogue in the 'time' context box
says: from 7.00, every 15 mins until 7.05, which is impossible anyway.
Any more ideas?
Thnks again,
Funk

Once you setup a repeating context, then both the exit and enter tasks are run one right after the other, and Tasker sees that it's turning Autosync on and then off again, and probably does nothing because of this.

You'll probably need to make a single task like this:

Autosync on
wait 3 minutes
Autosync off

Thanks UncleMike - What you are saying makes perfect sense. I'll give your idea a go and see how it goes.

A couple other comments to help you.

First, why the Date context? It looks like this is happening every day. If you want it to occur every day, you don't need a Date context at all. It looks strange the way you have it here.

Second, your repeat of 15 minutes is doing nothing here. Your profile is only active from 7:00 to 7:05. It's not possible to repeat something every 15 minutes during a 5 minute interval...right?

Third, your Task 1 and Task 2 are both ENTER tasks. That means they both run immediately when the profile becomes active (at 7:00). That's why it isn't working. There is no "wait" or "pause" in between. You are turning it On and then Off again immediately.

In addition to what Mike said, I'd suggest deleting the Date context, and change the Time context. For the Time, just don't enter any range of hours at all. Only check the repeat box and choose 15 minutes. That will do it every 15 minutes all day long. (Alternatively, set a correct range, such as 07:00 to 19:00 or something.)

Thanks for your suggestions. It appears that ticking the 'repeat' box under the time context is the problem as this removes the "exit task" option. Hi
amlothi. I took heed of your suggestions and followed your advice, setting up a profile with a repeating time context with to and from boxes unchecked, but it does not work. Teh problem seems to be that, as before, there is no option to add an exit task.
Thanks again, if it works I'll let you know,
Funk

I don't think you need an exit task. Just a single enter task with 1) Turn on sync 2) Wait 3 minutes 3) turn off sync

Set the time (0700 am to 19:00 pm - or whatever), and then the repeat should be set to every 15 minutes.

Thanks for the quick response Amlothi. OK, my problem is that I don't seem to have the "wait 3 minutes" option on my time context (mine has 3 options:from time, repeat, to time)I'm running Tasker 1.1 on a HTC Legend running android 2.2.
Thanks,
Funk

The wait is not in the context, it's in the task. You have a context that repeats every 15 minutes, then your task contains 3 actions:

Autosync On
Wait 3 minutes
Autosync Off

Certain contexts in Tasker prevent a profile from containing an exit task. This is because these contexts represent events that happen (in an instant), as opposed to a condition that exists over time.

Any context in the Event category will behave like this, as well as a repeating time context. If your profile includes one of these contexts, you won't have an exit task, but you can have two tasks that are both executed when the profile activates. In your original setup, one task turned on Autosync, and the other immediately turned it off again.

Finally, it's all up and running. Thanks Amlothi & Mike for being so patient and taking the time to teach an old dog new tricks- I really appreciate it!!
I also feel that I have now got the Tasker bug!!

Take care both of you - I'll be around

Bit of a thread revival, but I have just got Tasker and it seems great. I have managed to set auto sync to come on only when my wifi is connected but I am trying to also add a time context for it to happen every hour but only when wifi is connected.

Does it matter which order the contexts appear in? At the moment I have:

Context: wifi connected Task: Auto sync on, wait 5 minutes, auto sync off
Context: Every hour

Is this the correct way to do this?
