Tech problem with messaging - please help!

I'm really sorry if this isn't the right place for this thread but ....

Hi there! If anyone can help I'll be suuuuuuper grateful.

Yesterday evening, my phone ran out of battery. When I turned it on again I tried to send a text message but I couldn't open the messaging application. So when I pressed the message icon on the home screen, it went black and then returned to the home screen. When I've tried afterwards, it sometimes gives me a message along the lines of "processcom.messaging.android needs to close" -- i can't remember it exactly but it's something like that - it only flashes up and then goes.

Any ideas what I can do? People have told me they've sent me text messages but I'm not getting any notifications and can't open the messages at all. I use my phone for texts more than calls, so feeling a little paralysed!

A kind chap on another forum offered some pointers - firstly clearing the data from the messenging app (didn't have any effect) and secondly trying a third party messenging app, Handcent. This also didn't help as it gave the same message which was, to be more precise:

"The application Handcent SMS (process com.handcent.nextsms) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again."

I'm getting a bit desperate so thanks for any help at all!!!

Hmmm, sounds like your SMS database was corrupted, probably by having the phone quit unexpectedly. You may be forced to perform a factory reset which will clear all user data. Make sure everything is backed up before you try that, because it will wipe ALL user data from the phone.

I don't know how to do that .... I don't know how to do a factory reset or make sure everything is backed up. I know I can take my pictures etc off and keep them safe, but I don't know how to do the same with my contacts and I'd be lost without them! Any tips?

Do you sync your contacts with Google? If so, there is no need to back them up as they are already saved to the cloud. The easiest way to check is to log onto gmail from a PC and see if they are there.

If you have any email messages you want to keep that are not gmail then you'll need to save them, too. The easiest way would be to forward them to gmail.

You said you know how to copy your pictures so just copy them to a PC and they'll be safe along with any media like music, ringtones or videos that you'd want to keep.

Finally, your text messages. Assuming that the database is corrupt, it may not be possible to back them up, but you can try an app like SMS Backup & Restore. It will save any messages it can read into a single file which you should also copy to a PC to be safe.

Now for the reset ... Since you can boot into android, all you need to do is go to menu>settings>privacy and choose factory data reset. The wording might be different depending on model of phone and Android version, but it's there. Once you do that, your phone will reboot (and this might take a while as it rebuilds the stock system) and you're phone will be put back to the way it was right out of the box.

If you had performed any system updates, your phone will stay at the current OS level. For example, if you bought your phone with 2.3 (Gingerbread) and have since upgraded to 4.0 (Ice Cream sandwich) then the phone will like you bought it new with 4.0 (ICS).

Now you will have to re-register the phone to your Google account but you'll be able to reinstall any paid apps without paying again.

Then, first thing to do is make sure you can send and receive texts. If so, and you were able to backup your old messages, then try and restore them. If you can still send texts after that, then you're good. If, however, it breaks again when you restore your old messages, then you can be certain that there is something corrupt there. You will need to do another reset and then don't restore the old messages.

Good Luck.

Hi Lunatic59,

Any chance you'd know why 5 out of 60 contacts can't get my text msg, I'm with Metro and have an LG-ms770?

There really shouldn't be any reason why you can't send a text to anyone. SMS messages are fairly generic. Now, if you are sending MMS messages and the recipients don't have a data connection, they won't be able to get them.
