Help Test Message notifications

When I get a text message I hear a short sound. If I miss that sound is there any other indicator that will tell me there is a message?

Will the sound keep going until I get it? Will there be a visual notification on my phone? (my Samsung Seek) had a flashing star.

or do I have to keep checking which is really a pain in the butt

Non-stock text messaging apps such as GO SMS and Handcent have options to persist notification until you check the message. There are also apps like NoLED that will put a colored message on a screen saver to let you know you have different notifications. You can customize a color each type of notification.

Once you get a text, the New Text Icon will appear in the status bar section at the top of the phone in the upper left (see attachment for status area). It looks like a rectangle with a smiley face.
