Testing the water on VoIP

Hi, I am new here. Just want to see how many of you have actually ditched the voice plan, and using the data only plan to make calls with a VoIP app like the sipdroid.
 
I've got a Droid that I now use around the house as a cordless phone (I cancelled my Verizon service), using VOIP. Works well. I've got it hooked up using google voice, sipgate and sipdroid. Did the same setup on my wife's iPhone. The sound quality is amazingly good, just a bit of a delay, but once the conversation starts, you really don't notice it.

When I cancelled my service, I did ask about a data only plan and had several reps at Verizon tell me they did not offer that, that I had to have a voice plan. So I probably did not answer your question as I'm now using it over wifi, and not on their network for VOIP.
 
Also check your contract. Most mobile operators do not allow you to use VOIP over the data plan, the ports may be open but you'll be in breach of contract. You'll be fine on WiFi though.

How are they going to know you are using VoIP? Yes, the UDP packets looks like SIP, but what if you are using a standard protocol connected to your home machine and from there SIP to a standard VoIP provider.

lol, yes you could do that. Whether they know or not wasn't the point. The point is you could be in breach of contract so if they did find out find out they could theoretically sue you.

I just wanted to make sure people were aware as most people do not read their terms and conditions before signing a contract and most mobile operators include this in their T&C's.
 
damn wireless telecoms slipping in little details like this just so they could suck up more money from us. I heard AT&T recently announced they would allow iphone users to use voip apps over their 3G network? Maybe things will change?
