Tether Fix (Solution)

This method requires root!

*As always make a backup. I will not be held responsible for any damages you do to your device*

These steps will let your device enable WiFi Hotspot. The app Shorcut Master from the Play Store is the only app needed, as everything else is done on the device.

  • Open Shortcut Master
  • Open the 3 dot menu (upper right corner), select Search (third option)
  • Type APN, then tap SEARCH
  • Scroll to and select com.lge.hiddenmenu, it says underneath it in Grey lettering com.lge.hiddenmenu.vzw_only.apnsettings
  • Select Launch (the red rocket icon)
  • Select Internet
  • Scroll down to APN type
    You will see default, mms,
  • Add dun to the end. So it reads "default,mms,dun" exactly
  • Open up 3 dot menu and select Save
  • Reboot
  • Open WiFi hotspot settings, configure a SSID and a secure password (absolute necessity)
  • Final step, ENJOY

*I was able to use WiFi hotspot without any build.prop edits. I am a Virgin Mobile customer, but this should work for all carriers*

If there is any additional steps that I didn't include, meaning extra steps that are needed for your phone variant to access wifi hotspot, let me know so I can make this as complete as possible.
 
Worked like a charm. For virgin mobile customers it doesnt appear any other steps are needed except those mentioned above. We will have to see if virgin mobile clocks our use via the built in hotspot vs third party app. If they do we will know soon enough. I have purchased their hotspot before and can tell you that the built in hotspot does record amount of data used via hotspot and communicates it to virgin so they can in turn disable it after alloted amount is used. Third party method does not report amount used. Will be interesting to see how this goes.

You know when I first signed up with Virgin, I had free hotspots (them cheap bastards). Well see what happens at the end of month (~September 13). I think there might be a way to permanently disable tether check-in. I'm going to poke through the phone hidden menus see what I can find, I remember reading about it once before for a different device (should be similar though).

Your absolutely welcome. Glad that it worked. Just check out your bill at the end of monthly cycle to make sure your speed didn't get throttled, if so I'll find a workaround. Just keep me posted to your findings.
 
Update. After using this method. Im not seeing any data count in my account>wifi hotspot management. So early on this Looks like a mych easier method for wifi hotspot vs installing an app to handle it all. With this you can install,set configuration,then uninstall inital app.

Didn't work on my Tribute on RingPlus, unfortunately -- unless of course, I'm totally blind. It should show up under the More option in Wireless & networks, correct? Same place VPN settings are hiding?

Yes in more, should be top option on that page.
Did you tap the 3 dot menu after adding "dun" to save it? (while in Shortcut Master) then rebooted?
 
I've done this before on several Android devices, but this one is giving me grief. I can get it to broadcast in some apps but it won't serve up DHCP to clients. Other apps won't even broadcast. Starting to think a hammer to the screen is my only option. ;)
 
This is only my second smartphone, so the hotspot thing is new to me. I already paid for a month, but I'll try this out when it expires. Thanks.
 
I believe my plan already has unlimited data, although it gets throttled after 2.5 gb; I meant I already paid for the hotspot service, which is an extra $5.
 
Nice. Currently I'm using WiFi Tether Router (with what looks like the pillsbury dough boy on the splash screen holding an antenna, if that helps clarify), which was the first of 6 or 7 apps I tried that worked.
I'm using an LG Tribute, rooted.
Had rooted an old Kyocera Rise and it worked for tethering with almost any old app, which was nice, but I threw that phone and broke it...oh well.....
If the app I'm using now stops, this method will be next. Awesome!
 
Hotspot service expired, so I gave this a try - Yay, it does work. Thanks so much!

(Mostly so I can keep games on my Nook and not have them take up space on my phone...)
 
I kept getting an error while:

Id would display Error type 2 and list a page of coms that were failing. Only after installing X-posed, while installing Greenify, did I try Shortcut Master (lite) again, and lo and behold, it finally worked. I don't remember reading in Shortcut Master's description anything about needing X-posed framework to work, I'm probably wrong, however it works now. If anyone else were having a problem getting it to work while having that error message, try X-posed!

The error would have to reproduced to run a logcat. I understand you got it to work, but Xposed has nothing to do with your issue. Most likely when you rebooted for the installation of Xposed, whatever was a muck cleared itself.

I can go back later and dig through logs to see what was the root cause of the problem. I had rebooted probably 20 times throughout the day changing settings and doing other fixes. Every time I would select the ..apnsettings, it would pop up and show an error that was long enough to cover the majority of the screen. It referenced multiple services not running or responding. I did a quick google and a few hits referenced ADB issues. I kept getting errors from Greenify stating that it couldn't hibernate several apps, so I read a little bit and realized that I needed X-posed framework installed to get the rest of the apps to sleep. I dl'd it, installed, rebooted, checked that Greenify worked, jumped back to Shortcut Master and it works all of a sudden. First thought is that X-posed, which was the only thing that had changed, was what fixed it.

I think it does have something to do with xposed. I was getting the same error message since the zv6 update. I tried manually wiping cache and dalvik after installing the app, and still got the error 2. Tried installing xposed, worked instantly. This makes me think something in the app is either dependant on xposed, or that installing xposed cleans up some file we're not aware of. They don't state you need xposed though, so I'm thinking the latter.
