now that the free use of mobile hotspot is over, is anyone having success with tether? I'm not interested in rooting and it appears that this app doesn't require it. i used it on my old BlackBerry and it worked just fine. thanks.

You can just use pdanet.

I'm sure PDAnet is a good one, but I couldn't get it to work on my laptop and neither could the folks at their tech support. You can also try Easy Tether. I haven't tried it yet, but it's also for unrooted phones. Oops, sorry. I just noticed Seeker already recommended that one.

Pdanet and easythether are the two that seem to be the most widely used. I confirmed that easy tether still works after the update. I do not mind using usb given the battery life while using 4g. I may pick up a real short usb cable to minimize lap clutter.

Anyone compare Easy Tether to PDAnet to Klink? I'd like something that is pretty easy to work, but if possible spend less than $10 (does PDAnet costs $20?).

I looked at Klink and it said it is not compatible with Thunderbolt, so it may depend on what phone you have. Other than that, I think it's just a matter of features, so just compare them and see which one you think will work best for you. Most of them have a free option to try first.

Klink is actually compatible with the Thunderbolt based on my experience. Where did you read that it was incompatible?

I'm not in an LTE area so I can't say anything about insane 4g speeds, but someone on XDA posted a speed comparison of all of the programs last week. It's with the Droid Charge, but the phone model shouldn't really matter for this sort of program.

USB Tether Speed Test Comparison - xda-developers

All of these programs use similar principles to do the job: router emulation on the phone with the Android app combined with a USB connection over the Android Debug Bridge, adb, to the PC. The only real difference should be speed and developer support.

Klink is the only one that can handle torrents, IIRC. It's probably suicide to do that over wireless, but it might be one indicator of performance.

 Question, if I use Easy Tether, will it be seen as a hotspot and then I would have to pay the extra monthly fee for hot spot usage? I have not been able to find an answer.

NOTE: I AM BY NO MEANS AN EXPERT

My understanding is that these tether programs use USB debugging mode, rather than an official tether mode, to move information between the PC and and the phone. That is the first line of defense--the phone does not know it is tethering. What is not clear is if there is an attempt to spoof the browser type information. From what I have read, using these types of programs of T-Mobile's network requires this spoofing to work. I have seen nothing to indicate that Verizon does. When you think about it, there would be very minimal difference in the data between browsing with a PC browser and browsing with a phone browser.

I have used easy tether and have seen no indication of additional charges on my account.

I also got Easy Tether on Amazon, mainly because it was one of their deals of the day and marked way down. I don't know if I'll ever use it, but I was curious about the software tethers and thought I'd better get one in case they all disappear.

Notspecial, I didn't think about that. I usually don't even try an app if it says it isn't compatible with the TBolt.
